Royal Hideaway Playacar vs. Valentin Imperial Maya

My husband and I are planning a trip for January 2017 and want to step it up a notch. I can't decide between the two resorts but I'm also open to other suggestions. I'm looking for adults only, really good food, shade by the pool and beach without playing the towel game, premium drinks that are not watered down, and good service. I like that VIM has reserved sunbeds with shade but it is far from town. My husband likes Royal Hideaway since it is close to town. He also doesn't want a huge resort so the Royal is out. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have stayed at the Royal Hideaway and no complaints plus love the fact that it is smaller & closer to town. That would be my pick

The Valentin is what I'd call quite huge! The Royal in PDC, if that's what you were referring to, isn't even what I'd call big, let alone huge.

Also, shade by the pool at the Royal Hideaway is by umbrellas. But on the beach, there is a small grove of trees so you'd have to move with the sun. For the rest of the beach, they use those fabric canopies that lay on the sand and go halfway over two beach chairs.

At the Valentin, the Sunbeds around the pool and on the beach are for those with the Privilege package or you can pay $42/day to reserve one. There are shady areas around the pool that don't cost anything but you can't get there too late or they'll be gone. There are a few palapas on the beach that are free, in front of the Emerald rooms but the other end of the beach (swimming area), the chairs are just out in the sun.

I have been to both and would choose hideaway I think it is much nicer and the service and beach are better. It feels very quiet and empty even when it's busy and the food is excellent. Probably the best we have had at an ai. The crowd is quiet and older and there are not a ton of activities but we love that.

There are actually quite a few palapas on the beach by the swimming area that are free to use.
