Looking for Help Narrowing Down Resorts

Hi! We are planning on our third trip to PDC this coming May. The past two trips we stayed at the Grand Palladium and absolutely loved it. We likes the large resort, awesome pools, great beach for swimming and good food with lots of variety. Hubby wants to try somewhere new this year. We have an 11 year old and will be going with another family with an 11 year old and an 8 year old. Some of our must haves are:
  • Decent food with a lot of variety. We loved the buffets at the Grand Palladium and they changed it up a lot so we never felt like we were stuck with the same old things. They had a really good lunch buffet also that had a lot of fresh stuff (I can't hack greasy fried stuff for lunch every day)
  • Pools that can accommodate kids but don't necessarily need slides, etc.
  • Kids club that can accommodate both ages or have separate age groups.
  • Good beach with some shade and good for swimming.
  • Some free water sports would be great (kayaking, snorkeling, etc.)
  • We would love a clean, somewhat updated room but it doesn't need to be super luxury as we won't be spending a ton of time in it!
  • We want to stay under $1,500 for 2 adults/1 child for end of May 2017.

Here are the resorts that we are looking at:

Iberostar Tucan
Sandos Playacar
Royal Haciendas (have heard some negative reviews about having to change rooms if staying over a Saturday, not a lot of variety of food, having to pay extra for food/drink choices, etc.)

Any other suggestions in that price range? Who know deciding on a resort would be so much work

We like the Barcelo resorts but they are above our price range (closer to $1,900)

...tucan is a beautiful resort...we've toured it while staying at the riu Yucatan...which is one of our two favorites, the other being riu palace mexico...we've stayed at the iberostar paraiso del mar north of playa del Carmen...they have really nice pool areas and lots of lush greenery and animal/bird life on the resorts...the beach at the tucan is lovely as well...

Royal Haciendas is more of a time share property, not really like a typical AI resort. I would personally give that one a pass in favor of either of the other two, IB* Tucan or Sandos (and I would pick IB*).

But..Barcelo sounds like just what you're looking for and if it's only $400 or so over budget, I think that would be money well spent. If this is a 7 night trip, it only comes out to about $58 more a day.

Thumbs up Tucan every time!

My husband and myself have just had some great news that we are fit
to travel!! so we can now tell the travel insurance people and make
arrangements to book a wonderful holiday at this beautiful hotel!
My husband has had major heart surgery and also kidney probs....which are now controlled with medications.......I have had a new knee fitted
because of arthritis......so we can now get on with having some fun!!
I think we deserve it......also our daughter will be getting married at
this hotel on the beach in September..... and it will be our RUBY wedding anniversary too (40 years) wow ...so anybody dithering which hotel
to go to I can certainly recommend the TUCAN/QUETZAL.....
