I think the reputation here is worse than the reality.

Here's the thing, most rental places, restaurants, and hotels (economy and mid-range even) do have bad Internet. The owners pay for the cheapest plan (10 Mb) and the split it out on a cheap wireless router for everyone to share. I'm guessing most of your experiences you're reading about are not from people who have paid top peso for the high end business class products.

If you have your own place you can get both TelMex and Izzi. Izzi offers a 100Mb plan. I haven't even gone there yet since the 20Mb plan has been sufficient for my work. (Facetime is my primary communication tool)

If you can do a lot of your work on a smartphone, a good data plan would serve as a 3rd back up, as when there are service issues they can take a while to resolve. (Spanish is a HUGE plus, as sometimes you'll get the tech's cell numbers, and if you tip them and keep their number, you can get express service in the future!)

IUSACELL is ATT these days so that might help.

I will say my IUSACELL phone seems to work better for data where I live in the sticks than in Playa, not sure if it's my imagination or reality.

December/January is one of the best times to see if it will work. For me internet speeds go down the proverbial toilet during the high season. I have always assumed too many tourist streaming movies etc etc.
We also have Playa Wireless and it has been the most inconsistent and frustrating thing we have dealt with since we moved here. Frequent outages, slow Internet (sometimes as slow as .2 Mbps), and empty promises about fixing things. I have wasted so much money having them as my ISP. I use my phone as a hotspot far too often and we are looking to use ANYONE else that can provide a reasonable speed with reasonable consistency.

We managed to launch an IT startup in Playa in '98 on a dial-up connection.

There's always a way... but that 'way' might cause friction if the rest of your team doesn't understand your situation and just assume you are drunk on the beach.

Worse than internet availability was power quality then... lots of brown outs. I had to replace power supplies constantly. Nowadays, with most of us using notebooks for everything, I would bring a backup brick and install a real ground on that outlet. None of the places where I lived had a true ground on any outlet.

Getting services back up is best accomplished by getting an official work order and a copy of that at the main office of the service provider. Then you go out on the street on your bike and find a tech and 'persuade' him to come climb your pole and fix your issue.

Personally, we left Playa del Carmen in 2014 because the Internet reliability just didn't work for us. Too slow, and down every week.

What building do you live in if you don't mind me asking. Looking to purchase a condo and one of our "must have's" is best internet possible.

I like to comment on this. In every apartment that been in I had my own internet. Every single apt I had issues with the internet where I had to go to izzi to have someone look at it.

Internet sometimes would go out then come back. But when it works it's good. I have the most basic plan the one that I believe is 10mbps? I know you can get 20 or 50 or even 100mbps I believe? Can someone here confirm? For me 10mvps or whatever is the basic one is enough for me but other things I know you need faster speeds. Who here has izzi and Telmex and both went down? I heard Telmex is very reliable and doesn't go out much but it's slower since its Dsl. That's true right?

Also have you guys really struggled with backup internet on your phone? My iPhone which I use telcel, when I use the data, it's extremely reliable. It's obviously not as fast as my main izzi internet but pretty close. So I'm curious why people here mention the phone or internet stick backups are not that reliable. Obviously it's very expensive if u use data from phone and then stream or do anything that uses lot of data.

Anyone use Izzi for Internet and use a VPN? On Nov 1st, after a year of using a VPN with no problems, it stopped working.

A little troubleshooting showed me the problem ONLY exists when I use Izzi. Telmex works just fine. None of my coworkers anywhere else in the world have a problem. I even tested a Windows 10 and and old Windows XP machine. They don't work on Izzi, they both work on Telmex. I contacted Izzi and they told me to upgrade my service and see if that works

Anyone else experiencing this oddity?
