Not true. I also have the Hero, and elected to purchase the snap-on view finder, although I never use it. Interested in purchasing mine, never used? Btw, don't forget to purchase a filter before using the GoPro for diving or your results will be garbage. I highly recommend the Flip4 by Backscatter.

GoPros take terrible underwater video, with a strong "jello" effect evident on many videos.

A Lifeproof case is great around the pool or on a boat. I don't worry about my phone at all on the pool deck or if I drop it in the water. On the boat, I don't worry about splashes or having it fall on the deck. If it goes overboard, it'll probably flood before I can get to it. I would not snorkel with an iPhone unless I literally never did a surface dive - the case is not waterproof below a couple of meters.

There are true dive housings for iPhones, but why? You can get a case and module to turn it into a dive computer, but a real computer won't cost any more and will have vastly better battery life and more reliability.

If you want to take photos while snorkeling, there are point-and-shoot cameras that are sufficiently waterproof for that use that take great pics and HD video and cost a fraction of what an iPhone does.

Nonsense.

Anyone that knows the correct settings on a GoPro won't have any problem. Refer to Vimeo or YouTube for countless examples.
