Cost-of-Living Comparisons

Here is a very interesting way to get a general approximation of living costs in Playa del Carmen verses where you live. Or you can compare any two places' costs-of-living expenses.
You will have to copy and paste this into your browser.

We lived in Portland, OR before moving to Merida

This site tells me that the cost of living in Portland is 179% more than it is in Merida

Zihua (I had to use Acapulco, but prices are roughly the same)- would be 55% cheaper than living in Saskatoon. PDC was the same result, which is not accurate, though, ime from traveling anyway- for being an ex-pat it's likely similar.

The caveat I saw was that there are insufficient data points to render more than a guess for the following three comparisons to Merida, Mexico:

Wilmington, Delaware -21%
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -65%
Portland, Oregon -64% (not trying to call you out Ron, just curious if we would get different results)

Then I compared Wilmington, Delaware to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wilmington came in at -9% less than Philadelphia. Seems to me like that should be more in the 40% range considering the above comparisons to Merida:
  • If Wilmington is 21% less expensive than Merida and Philadelphia is 65% less than Merida, shouldn't Wilmington be about 44% less than Philadelphia?

I managed to graduate from college without a stats class. Anyone care to comment on the above? Shed some light?

Al, it's a fun thing to kick around, but I'm not sure I'd base a life change on the numbers.

Ron, you're a numbers person, what's you're opinion?

What you get depends, in part, on which city you list in the top box. I got that Wilmington was 26% more expensive than Merida - and now it is not giving me any results.

I just spend what we need to and hope there is some left over .

My opinion is that there are so many individual differences that it is difficult for it to be meaningful at the individual level.

This site gives you all the details on cost of living in any two different countries

I found this one very useful...Not sure how updated the info is but it looks reasonable to me.

You can see all the detailed pricing on food items, housing, travel cost etc. Try it out.

It costs less here than it does there, generally.

How much it costs depends on how you live

I did the cost comparison between Calgary and Playa about 3 years ago and the difference was about 30% back then. I am not surprised that the gap has become 56% now. The sad reality is it will cost more to live in Calgary / Alberta starting in Jan'17 thanks to the "more taxes, the merrier" NDP government.
