Not sure if you are travelling with children, but I have taken collectivos with my girls and had no problem. When I am going just to Tulum, we like the ADO bus and then taxi to a beach club (did the ruins years ago so skip that now).

We snorkelled at Yal Ku Lagoon last year and loved it. We did have a rental car for that day though because it is not really a doable walk with kids from the highway to the lagoon. We also spend half of the day at La Buena Vida as that is my girls favorite place.

We rented from America Car Rental for 3 days and it was so easy and cheap that we are doing it again this year. Get a quote in pesos since you are a fellow Canadian and Bluenoser. You should never pay in USD. The exchange through your credit card from pesos to CDN will be much better.

I'm renting from American also this year... in just a couple of hours. Heading south to Felipe Carrillo Puerto tomorrow about 9 am if you want a lift to Tulum and your not too many.

1952BSA: Like Jodeci advice you,If you rent a car try to have your quote in mexicain pesos. It Will Be cheaper then a quote in usd. I rent a vw gol for a week @ 3696 pesos Which is $174 usd.But whit the usd quotation it was $240.
It was a full coverage from America car rental in Cancun.

I've watched whats going on in the bay, but Akumal is much more than that.

Nice to see the collectivos out near the highway finally waiting to take those back to Playa, Cancun...etc.

Our last 4 times to Akumal, we never even slowed down in Akumal Bay.

Reminds me of the cruise ship folks that diss Playa because "it looks just like every other place I've ever been".

Friendly advice for those renting from American Car Rental from a former customer of theirs - look around.

We thought they were pretty good until we realized there are better rental agencies.

Some of the things we didn't like about American:
  • Located Off-site from the airport.
  • Old, beat vehicles. At least when we used them.
  • Wait to locate and then for shuttle driver to take us to their off-site office took a looong time.
  • Wait at their office once we arrived took a looong time. Smelly office, btw.
  • Although we had a reservation, paperwork at their office took a ridiculous amount of time. Around an hour as I recall.
  • Drop off, off site, requiring a shuttle drive to the airport, was painful. Guy was literally crawling under the vehicle. He was out to find something, even if it wasn't there. That was the last straw.

None of this with Avant Car Rental.
  • SMART meeting spot at the airport arrivals area away from the chaos outside the doors.
  • Walked to our vehicle, a quick paperwork confirmation and we were driving away. New car.
  • Drop off at the airport could not have been quicker.
  • Price quoted was the price we paid, right down to the peso. No games or hidden costs.

We'll be renting from Avant once again in a few weeks for our 2 week rental. Easy decision.

I have heard good things about Avant but their site only lists prices in USD so that is a no go for me. If I can't get a quote in pesos so that I know how much the car will be in pesos, which is the only way I will pay, then I can't use the company.

Have you contacted them and asked?

I like written quotes and don't like dealing with people on the phone so it is not worth it to me to go to that trouble. I just think it is something that they should offer on their website as they are renting cars in Mexico and not the US.

So don't call them, request a written quote, in pesos.

We used Avant in April and had no issues whatsoever. You give your info, but they don't put any charge through until you get there & sign. Honestly, the service was great and we will absolutely use them again.

I need to actually do something first. I've only taken two pics so far. Things around here are pretty same ol'. I'll try to get out moving down the highway tomorrow.
