Yucatan Travels

This is a trip report from our travels in February of 2016. We have been meaning to post this report for some time and with our next migration to Playa soon approaching, and having cold beers with warm waters on the mind, now seems as good a time as any...
This trip was roughly planned to travel areas we have not seen in past trips or have not seen in many years. Our planning consists of picking a spot on the map and figuring the rest out when we arrive, without any real schedule. Hope you enjoy!

First day, an ADO bus to Playa and our yearly tradition of beers on the beach before heading out to find a room for the night.

Food time

We found a cheap place for the night on 5th, I don't remember the name but $40 for one night and it was ok. We travel pretty light, small carry on backpacks. I decided to bring along a small coffee pot... sure came in handy on this trip!

Time to eat

On our way to the bus station we stopped for a snack, then some exploring before supper at Don Sirloin, good eats... We had an early start for Holbox the next day and were pretty wiped from the trip down so decided on an early night

Holbox

We got up early after a pretty good sleep, packed up and headed out for a bite before jumping on the 9am bus. We have never been to Holbox Island so decided we would spend a few days exploring... Gary even booked an ocean front place for a night on Airbnb, we usually just show up and find a place but it was such a good deal at $40 a night- with kitchen, more on that later lol

Breakfast in the park

Was a long bus ride but beautiful scenery. Not much at the ferry terminal other then a ticket booth Mexican style. Gary has picked up a nasty cold so not many pics to show

Smooth sailing

Once we arrive its our thing in new places to find spot, grab a beer and get orientated. We knew to walk strait from ferry till we hit the beach, much longer walk then expected... should have taken a bike taxi!

Beer and beach

We made it, chilling on the beach with a cold beer.... so Gary pulls out his map and starts looking for the place we rented. He is getting pretty sick so asks the bar tender if there is any Pharmacia close by, without luck. With our limited Spanish, map held down with beers and limited help from our bar guy we try to locate this beach front place Gary rented

Well that sucks

By this point we have not found the place we booked on Airbnb so we head back to the bar to figure it out. After more conversing with the friendly Bar guy and looking over our map we realize that I have booked a place in El Cuyo not Holbox! In my defense and to much laughter from Nancy it was the first time I used Airbnb and it did mention Holbox in the add. By this time my cold is getting worse and Nancy is getting hungry so off we go to find a room for the night

We found the cheapest place we could at $55... The only good thing about it was the free Bananas out the door

Supper and a plan

By this point my cold is pretty bad so we head out for supper and after getting eaten alive by mosquito's we decide to move on to our next location. Campeche via Merida. I figured I might as well ride out this cold while on the bus. Looking back now, maybe not such a good plan. We discover that there are only 2 buses a day leaving from Holbox ferry to Merida so we decide to catch the first ferry at 5:30am then the 6:30am bus

The first bus

Ok so after a very short sleep we are off to catch the first ferry then bus. I figured that being so early there would be few people on this ferry and when we arrived at the wharf we are the only souls. No lights, no ticket person, nothing but Nancy and I. Then a couple fellow travelers arrive, then a few locals and then the place is crowded with people! Still no lights or ticket person and I cant imagine how we are all going to get on. Maybe it was me but we could find very little info on the bus we wanted and we had know idea where to catch it. When we arrived, the bus just stopped at random and let us off, no "Bus Stop" no ticket booth.

So we make it on the ferry, then we land and start walking with many others towards 2 parked buses in the dark roadway. We hurry to the ADO bus that looks like First Class and get in line. Nobody to buy tickets from or ask questions. We are told this is the bus to Cancun so we walk down the road and see a Second Class bus and stand in line, its still dark and there are many people ahead of us, all locals. We finally get on the bus, last 2 seats at the back and are feeling pretty good about it.

Nancy says she needs to use the washroom and I agree so I get up and try the door... no luck, locked. The Mexican lady next to us, in Spanish tells us to go get a key from the driver. The driver, no English motions that there is no key and waves ahead and I guess he is telling me we will stop soon. We do stop, an hour and a half later, still dark and the lady next to us motions for Nancy to follow her, we do. She takes us to the bus dept building but it is closed, the bus driver talks with her and goes off looking for a key, returns without and motions us back on the bus. Then its every woman for them selves as the lady darts across the road and into a local mans house.... We are laughing by this point so I grab Nancy and follow. We manage to use the old guys washroom get back on the bus and away we go...

Next stop Merida! but wait, did I mention this was a Second class bus? So this bus stopped at every little town between Holbox and Merida. No air conditioning, widows don't open and worn out suspension. It even turned into a school bus in one town, picking up and dropping of kids at every intersection. At one point we were driving down a very bumpy gravel road to its end then back again... Good times when you are sick and there is no washroom but Nancy was having a blast, she loves this stuff... 6 long hours later we were in Merida!

Beer break, can you tell I needed it?

Now time to find a Taxi to the "Other" bus depot for Campeche, a city of over a Million and no taxi's, go figure- took about 20 minutes to get one
