Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias and Puerto Vallarta.

Pam and I decided after last year to take a break from Mexico for a while, and I thought maybe I would skip a winter trip this year to save the time for up at the lake cabin this summer and maybe some kind of fall trip. Well, when push came to shove Pam thought it would be nice to do at least some short get away, so we thought a return to the Riu Palace Pacifico made sense. We like the hotel because of the great staff and we think for an all inclusive the food is pretty good.

We landed in Puerto Vallarta 30 minutes early, and because we were in the second row of the plane we got down to customs quickly, and to our complete surprise there were no other people down in customs. We got through customs, got our luggage and were in our private transfer by the time our flight was supposed to land. Twenty minutes later we were at the resort.

After checking in at the Pacifico, we did the first thing we normally do, which is hit the bar. After a couple shots of Don Julio and a Miami Vice we headed up to our room. It took Pam about 15 seconds to decide she did not like our location. She did not want to be near the courtyard and pool this year.

We went down to the front desk and asked if we could be moved across the hall, which would give us a view toward Puerto Vallarta and it would be quieter also.

We then headed back to the bar for a couple of more drinks then went to dinner. By dinner I was quite buzzed. I do not drink much at home so I get loaded quickly, and I really was quite loaded. After dinner we watched a little of the evening entertainment, skipped drinking anymore and got to bed at a decent time. I was sure I was going to end up with a hangover.

To my surprise I was up at sunrise feeling great and ready to start my day.

Pam always sleeps later, so I headed down to the breakfast buffet for a quick little plate and for a walk on the beach. I had about four big hugs from staff members that I knew from our previous visits. They really aim to please, and each time they see you coming, whether it is breakfast , lunch or dinner, they have picked your table for you and watching over you closely to wait on you hand and foot. I notice many do not tip the staff, but I can not have people treat me so well and not reward them.

I then headed for the beach for a walk but on the way I was walking by the pool and noticed something familiar. Last year I posted a photo while talking about people getting up early and reserving pool loungers and then leaving for sometimes a few hours. It does not matter to me since we don't use the pool, but it is a sore spot for many guests.

This was the photo from last year.

As I came to the pool this year I saw this.

About an hour later as I am coming back from the beach there were two people standing by those chairs. I stopped and asked if they had been here at the same time last year, and of course they said yes. I showed them the photo from last year on my Ipad and they got a kick out of it. I did not mention why I had the photo.

It seems that there are a number of people who return to the hotel at the same time of year. Two days later I said to Pam a young man standing in lobby looked like the guy sitting in front of us who got sick on the flight down the previous year. Pam went up to him and asked if he was from Minneapolis, and he was,and it was the young man I thought it was.

Later that afternoon Pam started to have some stomach issues. As I have mentioned on another thread, Dr Beam got in touch with me when he read about it and he was extremely helpful with his advice and he kept in touch with me over the next 24 hours. I really appreciated his help and without that advice I am sure Pam would not have recovered as quickly as she did.

That night we spent most of the night in the room, but it was a full moon so I headed down to the beach late in the evening to do a quick photo experiment with light from the moon. I tried a couple of very long exposures while I ran in front of the camera and stood in a couple of spots for about 5 seconds each. This was the result I came up with. Not quite what I was going for, but I did not want to leave Pam alone to long so I did not try more.

I had a rental car scheduled for the next day so we could do our normal trip to Punta de Mita, plus we we going to try a couple of new stops up the coast. I canceled the car because it was obvious Pam was not going to be up for that trip. While Pam felt good enough to get up and go down to eat a little she did not feel great, so I took Dr Beams office and decided to see if I could find a doctor. It was Saturday morning so I did not know how easy it would be to see a doctor, but I called one in Bucerias and he told me he would see her if we could get there within the hour.

I had never been in a doctors office in Mexico. We walked into a waiting room that was about 12' X 6', with about a dozen people waiting to see the doctor. There were two couples from Canada who had been using the doctor for years, so I felt good about that, but there were a few local children who did not look so well so my only fear was that we might catch something from them. There was no nurse, just a little camera on the wall so the doctor could see who was in the waiting room. About every ten minutes or so the door would open and a patient would walk out and the next in line would go in. It took about forty minutes for us to get in, and the doctor was very nice and Pam said he did a thorough exam. The office visit was 300 pesos, about $15. He wrote a couple of prescriptions and we were on our way.

We hung around the hotel the rest of the day while Pam relaxed. Later in the afternoon I took a cab back to Bucerias for about to check out the market. Bucerias is a nice little town with a number of bars and restaurants, plus a large market and number of beach vendors.

Pam was starting to feel a little better that night, so we went to dinner. She loved the soup at the resort so she had some of that plus some mahi mahi which they had every night . It was wonderful. I had that, plus some BBQ rib, some jerk chicken and some rib eye.

Pam was feeling better the next morning but still not quite how she would want to feel on vacation. She just wanted to relax on the balcony and read a book so I decided to take the 50 minute walk back down the beach to Bucerias to exchange a couple of t-shirts that turned out to be too small. The guy at the market was so happy to deal with me because I did not try to negotiate a lower price on the t-shirts. The two shirts were only 240 pesos, which was only about $12 with the exchange rate. I could not bring myself to try to get them cheaper. One I got replaced a similar one I had bought about 10 years ago.

The first day we were there Pam went into the jewelry store at the Riu and saw some tanzanite jewelry she liked. It was overpriced and while the salesperson was willing to negotiate a little bit I was not in a buying mood. I was feeling bad for Pam, so before I took my walk to Bucerias I told here if she was interested in that jewelry I would buy it for her if she could get it for the price I was will to pay for it. I really did not think that would happen, but when I came back she asked me to go see the jeweler. I did not realize the jewelry store did business just like the beach vendors. Pam felt even better after I bought her these.

Later that day we went to the Mega, which is one of Pam's favorite places. She visited the pharmacy and picked up some of her favorite snacks.

This was a Sunday and we had planned on going into Puerto Vallarta in the evening because it is a special night at the Malecon. The locals head down for a night out of music and food. Pam really just felt like still relaxing because she was worn out from feeling bad earlier, but she insisted I head into town. I took a cab into town for a couple of hours. It is a fun night.

This couple was wonderful. They knew I was photographing them and they seemed to enjoy that.

Pam felt ok for the end of the trip. It obviously was not our best trip, but it was not awful either. Thanks for viewing.

Love Sunday nights on the Malecon. We just spend 9 days there in January. We stayed just south of the river at Molina De Agua. LOVED IT! Glad you enjoy PV as much as we do.

Thank you! I felt bad for her, but she has some friends going to Playa in a month so I have been suggesting she join them.
