Slow Board
Hi, I am fairly new to this board, but I have checked in a few times and every time I do, it seems forever for a thread to pull up after I click on it. It is very frustrating and I tire of waiting, so I give up and move on to another board.
I have Symptatico High Speed Internet Service and don't normally have a problem with websites and usually find I can surf the message boards quickly. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and is there a way to correct the problem at my end? |

Hi Sharyn, I'm from the Ottawa area and use Rogers at home and have high-speed at work as well and don't have any problems at all. This board doesn't take me any longer to load than others I'm on.
BTW, this is an excellent resource board for Playa. |

Hi geraldh, are you the same geraldh from the Aruba boards? Are you planning a trip to Playa or Mexican Riviera area soon or do you just enjoy surfing the travel boards like I do? We are going to Mexico in July for a family reunion at the Barcelo Maya. Have been there twice before. It is a great resort.
I think this board is great, but it can get a little frustrating if it is slow in pulling up the posts. Any other Sympatico High Speed Members having the same problem as me with slow loading? |

Yup, I'm the same user who's on tha Aruba board. I happen to come across this board from someone's post on that board and think this is a gr8 board for Playa and surrounding areas.
We've stayed at Aventura for the last two years and plan on going back again next April. I wouldn't mimd switching but like the Adults only aspect and I think the rooms at Aventura are great. Friends of ours are at the Barcelo Maya this week and Juan from the Aruba board is going there in June. Do you find this board takes longer to load than the Aruba board? |

Not sure if it a sympatico problem or not, but have been on the site a long time, and never found it 'slow' to load stuff. At times it is a litter slower, but overall quite fast compared to a few other board sites I have visited.

We have a dedicated server with a low load. Page generation times are normally a hundred miliseconds or so. The problem has to be on your end. It's likely a DNS issue with your ISP.
On a speed related issue, I've nearly completed our 2005 model which incorporates several updates that will yield even snappier pageloads. |

geraldh, I don't have a problem with the Aruba board or any other board, just this one, so that puzzles me still. I am SharonL on that board and probably the one that mentioned this board when I posted it there fairly recently.
denisea, james and other posters thanks for your help and letting me know if you are experiencing problems and trying to help me. denisea and james, I am not that computer literate and what you are saying sounds like Chinese to me. I have this old Nortel Networks modum that I got with Sympatico years ago as we were one of their first subscribers to their Sympatico High Speed. Wish I could trade it in, because everytime I phone them for technical service they ask about my modem and I tell them what kind and that kind of make a moaning sound, so I am beginning to think it is out of date. I am out of town tomorrow, but I think I will phone them on Thursday and mention what was said here and see what they say on how to improve it and also ask if they can send me a new modum. Thanks. |

James, now that it's been mentioned I do notice that this board takes a little longer to load than others. Could it have anything to do with the number of posts and threads that are on the board? I noticed that Topics in General had 5884 threads and 38983 posts! Is there an option to archive some of these posts? I'm not a webmaster and don't know if this would help or not but seems logical that the fewer posts and threads to load then it might load faster.
Just food for thought. |

Ok, James, try this one:
Why is that when I've been on the PlayaInfo site for a couple of hours (during the evening here at home), my navigating around the site gets progressively slower and slower. The only thing that seems to help is if I get out entirely and do a re-boot. I tried emptying my Temporary Folders file, but that doesn't seem to help. I usually have this site loaded at work from 9-5 (addicted, you see), but just don't encounter the same slowness, no matter how long I've been on or how much I've posted. I know they have a fancy-schmancy type set up there.. a T-1 line I think it's called?? Now, when you answer this (which I hope you will), keep in mind my total lack of geekiness when it comes to these things. I'm grateful I can get on this and move around without hurting myself. When someone asked me a couple of years ago what kind of computer I had, my reply was "Well.....it's beige!" And I was serious!! I didn't have a clue what it was or what Pentium do-hickey it had in it. Luckily David was with me and was able to answer the question after the laughter and pity died down....... Your expert knowledge dispensed in my general direction will be truly appreciated!!

Karen, In addition to emptying your temporary files, you might need to change the settings for your history and cache. You should be able to access these under "preferences" => "advanced". Clear the history and set the number of places visited to a lower number. Cache can take up lots of space and if it is set too high for your system it could slow things down. Clear the cache and set the MB size to a lower number. You may need to experiment with the settings a little to find what works best for your system and it's available memory.

Thanks so much for the advice!! I just did what you suggested, although I probably took it a step or 1500 too far. I wiped out the entire cache, and now all my delicious "cookies" are adios...... oh, well..... I'm sure I'll build those back up in no time!! I also set the MB to a lower number. Thanks again!!!! |
