Until last April, I didn't even know that this special Riviera bus existed. We had purchased outbound tickets on the Mayab bus to Tulum but the agents had oversold it. We enquired about our options and they pointed us towards the more expensive Riviera bus. I was surprised when they stopped inside the grounds of Xcaret and XelHa before continuing on to Tulum. Instead of just dropping us off along the highway at Tulum, they turned into the roadway leading to the ruins. As I recall, the upgrade cost was minimal.

On the highway, you catch a Mayab bus just like you would a collectivo. They run almost as frequently. There's relatively little difference in price. All of the Mayab buses in the past were big air-conditioned coaches like Riviera but in 2004 they started adding non-airconditioned buses similar to those in Cancun's hotel zone.

As for schedules, your best bet is to make a visit to the bus station when you first arrive to get that info first hand.
