Iberostar death?

I heard on the news today about something happening at the iberostar in Playa regarding a brother and sister on a family vacation where one of them died in the pool and the other in serious condition? I just saw the tail end of this story. What happened?

That article reads like a lawyer wrote it.

Some basic journalism would have turned up a few pieces of context. Such as:

Yes, there are multiple entrances to the property.

Having 7 shots in an hour isn't that uncommon among binge drinkers.

Bringing cash to a private hospital in Mexico to pay a deposit is normal and not evidence of organized crime.

Resources at local police departments in pretty any smallish city in a developing country are extremely tight, and if you want a full investigation, you're likely going to do it privately. Unfortunate, but normal.

No. Kidnapping rings don't target tourists by following them from the airport to their 5 star all inclusive hotels, only to drug and kill them in the central pool.

That "blog" they reference is an interesting collection of stories, but they aren't really big on fact checking their stories.

The employees and police were not as helpful as I wish they were. But keep in mind this is different than the US, where you can shoot a dog wagging it's tail and you'll have your union and your employer support you. These employees have no union, and the employer wouldn't hesitate to replace them in a second at their low wage for talking bad about the company.

With that said, it does look like foul play to me, likely a drunken fight. (both had blunt force injuries, and the brother referenced that there may have been a fight) I think going public and hiring a private investigation team is how I'd handle it as well. Shitty situation for the family.

And with 5 million tourists a year, a good number of accidents is to be expected. I hope the hotels, tourist companies, and tourists learn from these types of incidents, rather than shoving them under the rug.

I was just reading today that in 2016, 20 million (20,000,000) passengers went through Cancun Airport (ASUR statistic).

That is close to 55,000 people a day. Holy cow

I am glad Kathy was going business class and got a Delta helper from the ticket counter to the gate. No wait to speak of at the check-in counters.

I did not googAL it. I happened to pick someone up at the airport today and saw that tidbit posted about 20 million passengers making it the busiest airport of all of the Caribbean and Latin American airports.

That's a lot of shots (watered down as they may have been) for two people 155 and 130 lbs. Likely dehydrated from their flight too. Sounds like an altercation with the other group that they did a shot with (what happened to them?).

So a bunch of college kids get drunk and there's a fight that ends tragically. Could happen anywhere. Anytime. My 25 and 26 year old sons have been coming down to Mexico with us fior 20 years. We always impressed on them to stay vigilant and in control, especially when they started drinking. I watched my oldest son, when we were in Cancun, walk away from a fight he didn't start that he absolutely would have ended if we were in the States...

It's certainly a tragic, senseless story....but after reading all the facts, it really doesn't seem that fishy or mysterious to me. With all those shots, and that (verified) BAC, no need for there to have been drugs involved- even though that always gets brought up.

It seems like it would be actually pretty easy after 7 plus shots in an hour for a young, slim and inexperienced drinker to simply slip and fall and maybe hit her head on a concrete barstool and pass out and wind up drowned....and it gets dark early, was dusk at the time, so not that weird that no one saw....what IS weird, for me anyway- is that there were two of them.
