I disagree. The federales on la Quinta and cruising up and down Juarez, 20, 30 and Constituyentes kept the rats in their ratholes, for the most part. I think they did get a little too complacent after a bit, though.

If you are selling at Acapulco prices, let me know. If you really believe what you say, you will sell at pennies on the dollar, right? I would interested in that. Or is this one of those things like the guy who insists global warming is going to bring sea levels up a meter and flood the Yucatan but then buys oceanfront property?

I respectfully disagree about Playa becoming Acapulco. They are two very different situations, including the government's response (or seemingly lack there of).
I'm not leaving Playa because of this uptick in violence. I'm also not hiding it or pretending it isn't there. If it keeps up, it will impact tourism. How safe someone feels is based on perception, not on reality. I feel no less safe than I did yesterday or last week or last year even. However, if a tourist doesn't come to Playa because they perceive it to be dangerous or risky, then it doesn't matter if the chances are slim that they would actually be involved in a violent crime. They perceive risk, regardless of the reality of the situation.

I posted this on Facebook a little earlier when someone said it was becoming Acapulco:

I'm not quite convinced we are headed to Acapulco 2.0 here from a violence perspective. From a tourism perspective, it's definitely a cause for concern. As far as the level/type of violence, I think that Quintana Roo is in a very different situation than Guerrero was in when the violence began, from what I understand (not based on first-hand accounts, just what I have read). First, the violence began in earnest when Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels. This meant the military was fighting against the cartel that was in control. I believe it was the Beltran Lleyva Cartel (not sure on spelling). When the top guys in that cartel were arrested (as in many of the states), everything went to hell with smaller splinter groups setting up shop. Bedlam ensues, cartels killing cartels, cartels killing feds, feds killing cartels, cartels needing to send messages to the feds by attacking and killing tourists. A huge freaking mess. What is rumored to be happening now in this state is one cartel is attempting to take over from another cartel (And there may be a third in there somewhere, it's confusing to try to piece it together). It also appears (and this is just an observation because there hasn't been anything of an official statement that I've read) that the government (municipal, state and fed) are just standing aside and letting them fight it out amongst themselves. Not at all what was happening in Acapulco. I expect the violence will stay in the bad guy on bad guy territory but of course, that is dangerous in itself because innocent people will get hurt, as they did at the Blue Parrot. What concerns me from a tourist perspective is, let's be honest, people will not want to come here if there is a risk of souvenir shopping on 5th and the vendor selling you a trinket may be shot because he's also selling drugs for the wrong group. Am I personally nervous about being a victim of violence here? No, even with this latest shooting I'm not. However, if the U.S. or Canadian governments decide to issue a travel warning to this region, or if Mexican national tourism drops off significantly, Quintana Roo will suffer quite a bit and it won't matter if we are as violent as Acapulco or not.

My life here will continue on as it has and I will keep doing the things I love to do. Nothing has changed from yesterday to today for me. I'm no more or less afraid. Just my two cents.

Agreed. Acapulco has/had a murder rate of literally 10x what we're seeing now in Playa. For Playa to be Acapulco we would be averaging 1 - 2 murders PER DAY.

What we've seen so far is street thugs with small arms. Acapulco has heavy weapons and organized, almost "para-military" cartel units.

It's very possible to be concerned while avoiding making absurd comparisons.

Yes. And when construction on the new TB is completed (and it has not started just yet), the street level will be the new upscale Tequila Barrel Bar.

Exactly.

Now, from an impact to tourism standpoint, even a low level of violence from street thugs could cause a significant impact to tourism, depending on how it is perceived by tourists and foreign state departments and their travel warnings. An impact as was seen in Acapulco, who knows? Maybe not but if I were the state and federal government, I would be very concerned that Mexico's golden egg was about to crack.

The renderings that I have seen of the "new" TB show the same "open air" type bar on the street level (as it is presently). The new building will house the gaming consisting of slot machines (300) and gaming tables (30) and sports book on the 2nd and 3rd floor, and TB offices on the 4th (top) floor.
