And (as I also noted) the data applies through November of 2016. Haven't found an article with more recent data, but even to see that data through November of 2016, well it seems quite applicable and relevant to a number of folks referring to the situation over more than just the first half of this year. Not sure there's a jump in the statistics for this year, but if you have a link to such, I'd be interested in seeing it. Just saying there certainly is one... I don't find that convincing, myself. (shrug) I mean one hears an awful lot of misguided and exaggerated claims on the Internet and social media, and as often as not, people don't seem to know what they're talking about (no matter how emphatic they may get in claiming it's true). This is of course the case on all sorts of topics people talk about online, not just this kind of violence in this region of the world...

The highest number I've seen was Babaloo's 31 the other day. I'll round it up to 35 in 7 months. That's 60 for the year. If 250k is used for the population, that's a rate of 24. Looks like 2016 is 20 on the chart, but add December and it's about 22.

This is a definite risk to the image of Playa and the tourist industry. However, the biggest actual risk a person faces in Playa is still traffic.

PS This isn't "nothing to see", it's "see what is actually happening".

An approach I wholeheartedly agree with! That's my approach. But "see what is actually happening" of course falls between either extreme, form the one you mentioned to ones where there is exaggeration of the problem or even panic.

Not sure where Rick's numbers come from but OK, thanks.

Thanks, and I fully agree about the exaggerated posts and blogs and the misinformation being repeated. Just that when we chose the Playa area for retirement we weren't quite so concerned with violence, organized or otherwise...
We're not changing any plans, but Playa's image is certainly getting tarnished as mentioned. Hopefully this too shall pass...

well, such a silly statement.

What will get 'worse'? Violence in general? Nope. Violence caused by a territory cartel dispute? Nope, they are usually temporary.

the sargassum? Maybe that is it?!

Hopefully it doesn't get worse. Still not nearly as bad as American Cities like Chicago with 763 murders and 4330 shooting victims in 2016.

Agreed. And we're in an analogous situation, having elected to move back to Playa with our 2 girls recently...

120 homicides in QR. 2016 , population 1,3 million. 760 homicides for 2.6 million. So still 3x the amount per 100,000.
