Why do you think tourists are the target? The guy shot was not a tourist.

I think she meant that even though tourists aren't being targeted, the location of the most recent shooting makes the incident hard to ignore.

Ok, but there have been multiple shootings on 5th over the past few months. Why would this particular shooting be significantly worse than the shooting at 5th and 26th, 5th and 20 (or 22), 5th between 10 and 12? 10th and 4?

I think the number of incidents makes it difficult to ignore not the latest location (and most of us haven´t been ignoring any of them or the shootings on the other side of the highway where the majority of us live).

Just another large city. It's nice to see the regulars have slowed their pace on bashing Cancun. I had a feeling that would happen on this site at some point.

There has been a lot of Cancun bashing here?
I love the shopping in Cancun.
And the beaches are nice.
But thanks for your input, Mr. Positivity.

I am pretty much ignoring it. More concerned with pink eye at the moment.

I remember when we first moved into our house (one of the nicer middle-class neighborhoods in Playa. We bought early and cheap. ). Anyway, we had been living there about a year when one day a whole shitload of feds, locals and marines came storming in from all direction a few blocks down from our house. Turns out one of the cartels was using one of the houses to hold a kidnap victim. He was rescued and no shots were fired.

Point is, drug stuff ain't new here. The fact that dealers are being shot on la Quinta is new. As I have said before, I think those are more political messages intended to create a sense of fear and hurt the new government. It is seemingly working to hurt toursim but the local population is not freaking out to any really noticeable extent. It is, however, completely understandable for someone considering a vacation to take such events into account.

We are still planning on being there with a friend on her first trip to the Yucatan along with us, renting a condo near the beach in the central area.

Five nights with some day trips to Tulum, etc.

Plan on getting our friend drunk at Dirty Martini

If we get killed, it has been nice knowing you!!

That's a question and statement best posed to Debbiec I share your thinking on other locations and frequency.

As an aside, last night when I read this thread my husband was in the same room.

Me: Another shooting
Him: What time?
Me: Not in Wilmington, in Playa

You apparently have a short memory Bubba.

Anyone like you that's been on this forum for any amount of time can recall Cancun bashing given any opportunity.

Here's a refresher:

High rise hotels

Malls

Looks like Miami beach

Crime

....

Yes, this is correct. More crime these days, however. Mostly out in the regions where no tourist will ever venture. Lived there for three years 1999-2002. Loved it. Only step foot there now when I have to visit family or for work.

Sorry — been on the forum longer than either you or Babaloo and I haven't seen "Cancun bashing given any opportunity".

I don't think it's really been bashing per se, but more of a general 'Playa dwl Carmen is so much more authentic/charming/less touristy/All around better than Cancun' type of feeling.

And I say that as someone who prefers Paya del Carmen over Cancun very much.

Not been on the forum as long as you, but since 2005. I think "bashing" is a stretch, but PI posters definitely felt superior for being on the path less traveled down 307 back then and some way before.

I remember one line written by someone else, "Favorite way to see Cancun is in the rear view mirror heading south." sctx perhaps?

There were bragging rights for being off the conventional tourist radar. And I ate it up. It fueled my travel stretch a bit.

But it did involve Cancun vs "authentic" travel debate. Not like the debate we have now, it was less sledgehammer style.

We have been flying into and out of Cancun since 2003, in and out of the Centro bus station and to Puerto Juarez as well. Have not been to the hotel zone, but have friends who have loved it.

Choices, different ones should not imply superiority.
