Seeing, eating and exploring are all fun!!

The golf cart day was great. I do have some photos of the turtle place. I will have to find them, post them to Facebook and then post them here.

During a coherent evening sometime in July, with half the Summer gone, and realizing Bonny could not get 3 weeks straight off between mid-July and mid-September, well all hell broke loose. I made the mistake of suggesting 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks . Errm, uh, not sure what I said wrong, but it was wrong. I desperately tried to reign in my Things, but was not able to reign them all in . Finally I suggested I go with Bonny for the full two weeks instead of just the last week. Well that went over like . So it was decided. First week Spanish immersion classes, second week vacation to the coast. Oh, and I was going to the Spanish immersion classes with Bonny . So we booked flights for the end of July through mid-September. Bonny contacted Spanish immersion schools.

A week later a letter (email) was sent from one of the Spanish immersion schools. It was a test, to judge your Spanish speaking/reading/writing abilities.

Test?? Really??

Oh shit, what did I agree to?

Downloading photos now. Taking a long time cause it has been a long time since I moved them from the iPhone to the iMac.

# 4 The TEST

The Spanish Immersion school that Bonny had chosen for us to go to sent a Spanish test. The purpose of the test is to help them place you into the proper classroom setting, I guess they didn't want me to embarrass non-Spanish speaking students because of my fluency in Spanish (or something like that).

The test was 5 pages long. They were word problems, fill in the blank. No multiple guess questions - I was screwed. It wasn't even in English, none of it, nada, nothing. Did you know a written question in Spanish starts with an inverted question mark and ends with a question mark? I didn't know that. I was partially saved because numbers in Spanish look just like numbers in English.

Before the questions started, there is other information you have to fill out at the beginning.
Nombre - I got this one right, I think.
Telefono - Ah, another easy one.
Edad - Oh shit
Profesion - Another easy one
Email - Ah, an English word, wonder if it's a trick
Nacionalidad - Another easy one, maybe.
Sexo: - The answer to this one is 'Yes', I mean 'Si'

Then it got hard. I was unable to understand anything after this, let alone even attempt to answer the questions. I gave up and told Bonny I had nothing to send in. But she says, you have to fill it out to the best of your ability, I did my best - nothing. No, no, it's really easy she says and she shows me hers almost completely filled out - um no, I have no clue what is saying/asking.

Anxiety starts to set in, what did I sign up for?

Been looking at Europe again today.

Remember that port we brought back a couple of years ago, I think it was a twenty year old Taylor Fladgate Tawny Port.

We should all drink port on their patio that overlooks the Douro river and the city of Porto. They have Mercedes cabs, good for us designated passengers.

#5 - Packing and flight watching.

Bonny starts packing about 1 month before we are to leave. She has more clothes and bathing suits than I do. She also goes out and gets me a couple pair of swim suits (board shorts) - so she doesn't have to look at me wearing the same pair every day for 2 weeks. She wants to do all carry-on. In this day and age with TSA, security, red and green buttons I'm not so sure, but give it a the old college try. This means I have to buy a new carry-on (I don't own any baggage, I don't travel much). I check online for the sizes, and it seems the sizes are smaller than they used to be. A few days before we are to leave I stop by the store and check out carry-on luggage and do some measurements (most are 1" too tall) - and get overwhelmed, anxiety kicks in and I leave with nothing. Bonny went out and got a bag that was within the dimensions - it's tiny. We get packed up, liquids in 3oz or smaller bottles all of which must fit into a single 1 quart ziplock baggy. Check. My backpack has my computer, meds, liquids, toiletries and a swim suit; I wore the only long pair of pants that we were bringing. Bonny of course was ready 1 week before.

Our flights we booked were:
Aug 31 - LAX -> Houston -> Merida
Sep 15 - Cancun -> LAX

Anyone see a problem with those flights? Hint: His name is Harvey.

#6 Harvey

The easiest (and cheapest) way from LAX to Merida is United Airlines via Houston, TX. Our flight was scheduled for the morning of Thursday Aug 31. What happened Friday Aug 25? Harvey happened. Sat Aug 26? Harvey continued to happen. Sun Aug 27? Harvey wasn't going anywhere. . . .

Bonny called United Airlines on Sunday Aug 27, trying to figure out a flight change for our flight to Merida, one that did not go through Houston. I'm sorry, but your flight on Thursday is not cancelled. No, but you have a special waiver for those booked persons flying to or through Houston which extends past our flight date. I'm sorry, that flight is not cancelled. No, really look on your website. I'm sorry that flight is not cancelled. Okay, so what if you change our flight so we go from LAX to Cancun to Merida - you do have flights that do those legs of the flight. I'm sorry there are no flights that do that. No, there really are, here are the flight numbers. I'm sorry it's not in our system. This went on for 2+ hours; until Bonny finally hung up the phone with no resolution in sight.

So I got in the inter web, went to our reservations, clicked change flight - rebooked it for LAX -> SFO -> Cancun. Done and we got $140 back, which is credit for US flights only which will probably never use. Then booked flights from Cancun to Merida. Overall we arrive an hour later into Merida than we would have. The bad news we have to leave 3 hours earlier than we had planned.

Since that Sunday was ruined by being on the phone for hours, we opened a bottle of wine.

I am glad you had wine. The change in arrival time was not an inconvenience to us, not near as much as the early departure time was for you. I am glad you wen to the trouble!!

#7 Finally on our way - I'll make this quick.

We got up early. Showered. Drove to Van Nuys Flyaway. Parked. Bought tickets for the bus. Boarded the bus. Went to the airport. Checked in. Went through TSA pre-check security check point, I mean flew through, like really fast, not even a glance from anyone. Walked to the gate. Sat. A long time. We were really freaking early. And waited. Boarded plane. Plane took off. Plane landed in San Francisco. Walked to next gate. Met a few people who were going to party in Playa. Another getting over a breakup and was going to a resort and too scared to leave it. Another going to Playa for a nice quiet vacation. We boarded. We flew. We landed in Cancun. We flew through immigration. We didn't fly through customs RED light. We left customs, ignoring all the vendors. Went out the door of Terminal 3. Walked to Terminal 2. No vendors between terminals 2 and 3. Went into Terminal 2. Checked in. Flew through security, again. Found a bar. Sat. Ate. Drank. Walked to gate. Boarded plane. Flew to Merida. Got off plane. Got bags. Walked from baggage to the open arms of Ron and Kathy.

It was wonderful to see Mike and Bonny. We are getting used to meeting them at the airports. Bonny has met us at both the Bob Hope International Airport at Burbank, and at LAX. We sure do appreciate that.

Our arms were open, for sure.
