Question for Dog Owners

Hi everyone,

We are just 3 months away from moving to Playa and I have a question for all the dog owners out there. We will be bringing our 9 year old kelpie, who will need to be walked multiple times each day. My husband and I have stayed in Centro many times but have never stayed in Playacar during our trips. However, for a long term rental I am leaning more towards Playacar for two reasons:

1. I picture there being more green landscaped areas for the dog to do his business.
2. I picture there being fewer stray dogs.

Am I totally incorrect in these assumptions? Again, I have NEVER actually been to Playacar. We have stayed in Aldea Zama in Tulum and I picture Playacar kind of like that, except much further along in development, hence the basis for my assumptions.

For those of you who live in Centro (where we would actually prefer to live), how do you deal with these two issues?

Kris

I have a home in Playacar (Phase 2) and there are a million dog owners! Plenty of places to walk and take care of business. There are trash cans with doggie bags all along the main streets. In the late afternoon, I see plenty of dogs playing on the golf course as well.

You are correct in your assumptions. A few more things to add, having lived in both Centro and Playacar with a dog:

It my experience, it's not the stray dogs you have to worry about as they are usually fearful of people. It's the people who walk their Pit Bulls (though not exclusively Pit Bulls) off leash you have to watch out for. They are VERY sensitive people. If their dog gets excited and darts across the street to great you and play with your dog, you have to let them do so without question or comment or their owners get very offended. This is an issue in Centro, and not so much in Playacar (though it still happens, but more often with smaller dogs there).

Same thing goes for dog owners that don't clean up their dog's shit. On occasion I've seen an owner not clean up after their dog, and I've offered a poo bag. They almost always get offended when you do that.

Playacar has a lot more shade (and grass/dirt as you mentioned) so if you're here in the hot months, that's nice on your dog's paws.

Playacar is very dog friendly but dogs aren't allowed on the golf course so be forewarned. I know people let their dogs out there but it's private property.

Thank you everyone for confirming my theory.

We are pretty used to people having their dogs off leash in Denver but they are usually well trained and don't approach us. Our dog definitely would not appreciate a strange, large dog running up to him when he's on a leash, so thank you for the heads up.

Oh, and if anyone has leads for dog friendly rentals in Playacar, send them my way. That way we can make sure our pooch is the happiest!

Well, we booked a 2 week condo in Playacar, arriving Jan 26. Cannot wait to be back in Playa and also to check out Playacar. Any leads on long term rentals starting early February would be greatly appreciated.
