I can take a shot at changing someone who irritates me, the deadline on this report I have today, or the fact that I believe that the US travel advisory about the Riviera Maya is ridiculous. I can try and try and try to change people, places and things or I can accept they are who/what they are and change the only thing I really do have the power to change. Me.

And part of how I do that is by humbling myself and getting on my knees to ask for help with these changes.
yes - that is what she is trying to say.

To "effect change" is not the same as "control".

Not even in the same ballpark. I can try to convince someone to change with my words or order them to do so but it is not going to happen. For example, there are some things my wife would like to change about me. She may complain about them or give me the eye but they don't change. They are part of me. On the other hand, I can effect change by doing good things and being an example. This is especially true in recovery (which is the language the article was speaking) where one leads by example. If I told a practicing drunk what my life used to be like and he sees how different my life is now, he may get the hope he needs to change. But I am not going to change him. He is going to change his perceptions, attitude and behavior because he wants to.

You clearly don't, as you obviously read it. That explains a lot.
