Guy did not have a carry permit. I don't know whether the gun was obtained legally, but I would guess not, since he was Court Martialed by the Air Force and dishonorably discharged.

Most likely his gun was illegal.

Someone needs to tell me how we prevent that. That's not about "gun control" - so what do we do??

Drugs are illegal - that hasn't stopped the opiate epidemic from killing a slew of young people in my county.

What do we do?

The gun was legally bought.

You're right. That's ridiculous. How can a guy with his record buy a gun??

So what's the problem? Improper vetting?

We're never going to ban all guns, or take away guns from everyone in this country, let's face it. All the stating of why it should happen by some of you isn't going to change that.

So again - WHAT DO WE DO? Stricter gun laws? Like what? I admit to not really understanding it all since I do not own a gun.

Thank you, Captain Obvious, endless stater of platitudes.

We all know that. But something has to change and we all (Americans) know that, too. My husband is a skeet shooter, owns legal guns, doesn't want guns abolished either, but knows something needs to be done.

We need solutions.

I guess a tragedy like this just is something people are willing to put up.

I have and never will own a gun. I have never understood Americans fascination with objects manufactured to kill.

Whether he got it legally or illegally, he wanted to kill people and found a way to do it, and so will the next guy/gal.

The drug situation is a great example. People will do what they want, laws aren't going to stop them.

Wow. I don't know why I ever bother carrying on a discussion with you. If I'm stupid, you're the epitome of a self-hating American asshole.

Done with you.

What was stupid about her post? It seems like you both agree that something needs to be done.

People keep saying that but if you look at the NRA campaign and lobbying numbers, it just isn't true. What owns Congress (and should) are voters. And there are more voters who are adamant about the Constitution than aren't. So, while many of those (like me) would like to see some sane and EFFECTIVE gun regulation, that is not what we get. We get either knee-jerk reactions (BAN SILENCERS!) or those who want to ban guns completely (which very few say but it is not hard to read behind the lines. These, ironically, are some of the very same people who claim that cops shoot unarmed black men for fun and they want only law enforcement to carry guns). So, you get stalemate. It has very little to do with the NRA and everything to do with votes.
