Beach shootings at resorts near Puerto Morelos?

There are a couple of threads on TA discussing 3 separate shootings on the beach outside of 3 different PM resorts this week. All drug related, but during the day, on or next to resort beaches full of tourists. I can't seem to find any news about this anywhere else- information please? Is this really happening? I also read on TA and in the Yucatan Times about a shooting, again during the day, in a store across the street from that lovely playground park in PM's colonia. Also this (or last) week.

Popeye lives in PM. I know he is on facebook, I do not know if he monitors this board anymore, but he should get prodded if he gets an private message.

We are going to Playa tomorrow, picking up a friend who has never been here. I hope Brenda and us see no dead, shot up bodies in our five days there

Thanks, Ron. I'll do that.

I'm not one to get too alarmed by isolated incidents of crime, but 3 daylight incidents on tourist-populated beaches in a week in one relatively small area seems like things are escalating. It just seems to indicate a change in the way the cartels are operating. For example, I would probably stop visiting Boston if multiple drug shootings happened in the downtown area during the day. Isolated mass shooting incidents are impossible to predict and not worth worrying about unless you want to live in a bubble, but a pattern of targeted shootings is not that.

I also want to say that I really feel for people of any nation that have no choice but to live with violence and crime b/c they don't have any other options. I know I'm incredibly lucky for a variety of reasons.

Thanks. I had heard that, but I don't have a facebook account. I used to be able to read that page, but now you have to log in to see it. I've also heard that there are reports of some of these incidents on Por Esto- unfortunately, I don't read Spanish and I find when I use Google to translate Por Esto's content, it's pretty incomprehensible.

I was there. I stayed at the Ocean Coral & Turquesa from Nov 15-22. On the 16th, I wanted to take a walk down the beach at around 10am and my 2 girlfirends wanted to wait a bit. At about 11am, we walked down the beach towards Excellence Riveria Cancun and Dreams. I saw some red taped off area, which I thought was the resort releasing turtles....NOPE, it was a crime scene. Happened an hour before we got there. Thank God my friends were lazy that day or we would have been just walking by then. The body was laying on the beach just between the 2 resorts. A guy was shot directly in front of all the people laying on their sun beds. It was quite scarey. Someone said there were 2 bodies but we only seen one. Detectives and police were all there. You'd never known anything happened, because everyone was just going about their business. Overheard them talking about "cartel" territory or something. I was looking forward to going to Playa and eating out, but that kind of put a damper of traveling to town that week. My girlfriends were spooked out, as was I. I've never not felt safe down there, but to see if happen in front of a beach resort in front of all the people, was just crazy. It really bothered me all week.
As you can see from my countdown, my husband and I are going to the Catalonia in Feb. I'm really praying, nothing bad happens while down there, or we may take a break for a bit. This makes 2 times that I've been there that something horrible has happened, once to me, and then seeing this.

Unfortunately, this type of violent crime is happening more and more. And also unfortunately, many people who have a vested interest in keeping tourism strong, try to keep these events from being publicized. I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying even this much, but the truth is, crime is becoming a serious problem and sweeping it under the rug is not going to help or make it go away.

Huh? Local crime in Playa has made the news in local and national news outlets in the US. The US (and other countries) have updated travel warnings to specifically address local crime here. WTF are you talking about?

Mexico murders hit record high, dealing blow to president

Mexico has this year registered its highest murder total since modern records began, according to official data, dealing a fresh blow to President Enrique Pena Nieto's pledge to get gang violence under control with presidential elections due in 2018.
