Longer-term car rental option?

Have not come across any outfits providing a lower rate for an extended period, any contacts? We'll be purchasing a vehicle and may need a rental for a matter of weeks.

We went three months without owning a car, usually renting one for a couple of days every couple of weeks for major shopping, etc...

Would something like that work for you guys?

That may be the answer, we're in the El Cielo community which is 10 minutes north of Playa so it's certainly handy to have a vehicle all the time but not critical...

I've also read of folks purchasing a car (new) through a dealer before they got there...I suppose that's always an option if looking for a new vehicle...

Thanks for the feedback!

I had looked into this a couple of years ago. I searched the Internet at the time, and called a number of places, but found nothing better than simply going through one of the local agencies and getting the daily or weekly rate. This basically means paying $20 USD per day for a really small, lightweight car, or paying $50+ USD per day for something more full size. (prices may be different now)

I have similar issues/experiences wanting to rent a car for two months. I was even thinking of buying a used one but may not be possible on tourist visa so would have to buy one in my buddy's name. I'm going to research a bit when down but may hold off until I buy a place down there. Was looking at some places last year. The cost of renting a car is the same as the cost of daily living (when travelling). Doubles expenses.
If you find a great deal or have some other idea then please let me know.

There are independent people renting cars long term in Playa.
It will take some detective work on Facebook to find them.
Start with Expats & Locals Market in Playa Del Carmen.

Thanks Ian! I did see that name mentioned in the expat & locals market and I will contact him.

I see America's price for a VW Gol sedan/auto for 4 weeks is $900 US or $225 US/week which isn't as bad as I expected...
