Drivers License Requirement

Can anyone explain the process of how Mexican residents of Playa del Carmen obtain a driver's license? Do young people at the age of 16 apply for their beginners permit? Or is there such a thing? Do you people have to take a written and driving test to obtain their drivers license? If so, do they need to know the rules and regulations of the road, etc.????

The reason I'm asking is there seems to be so many accidents involving cars and motorcycles going through stops signs, red lights, turning inappropriately.....and on and on. And so many people are killed or maimed.

We ride our bikes everywhere around Playa and are very careful at all times. However, whenever we do take a taxi, many times we have to tell the drivers to either slow down, or pay attention to the road, etc. I just don't understand how the drivers get away with driving the way they do, and think nothing of it.

Does anyone else wonder about this??

In Mexico City I went in to get a driver's license. There was no test and it was very easy. I asked they why it was so easy, and they said they don't "license" driver's, but they just "register" drivers. Basically anyone can drive, they just want record of who's who when something happens.

Apparently they actually "license" drivers in many Mexican states, including Quintana Roo.

But generally the culture around driving is just "different" here.

Because there is no consequence unless there is an accident and even then whoever has the biggest wallet can change the consequence. The police do not enforce any traffic laws (or rarely do). They rarely, if ever, pull people over for speeding (thatīs what topes are for...so the taxi drivers just remove them so they can keep going as fast as they want). I have seen some of the craziest moves here that rival the craziness of Mexico City. Just the other day I saw a taxi driver do something that was so reckless and insane and no one batted an eyelid. Don Vergas! Taxi drivers and collectivo drivers are the worst offenders. They truly believe they are untouchable. Even if they cause the accident, youīll have 5 or 6 taxis there intimidating you so fast you wonīt know what happened.

Donīt even get me started on no car seats, infants on scooters, and kids standing up in cars. OH and taking a left from the right hand lane.

CDMX will require an actual driving test next year.

Freestyle!

Very timely question, this, as our older daughter has recently turned 15 and wants to get started with driving like all her friends back in the States...
