Recommended cell phone service/provider?

Local and international voice, data, messaging, unlimited if an option?
[EDIT]
We have unlimited data and messaging and hotspot with our US ATT plan while in Mexico, but limited voice minutes. Is it possible to get a sim card from Telcel to add local and long-distance minutes while still using our US ATT plan for the data and messaging for the few months we are there?

Telcel.
There is no unlimited data.
Amigo Sin Límite. Includes calls to US and Canada.
Do you have a dual sim phone? If not, no.

AT&T have a big presence in Mexico now. You may want to check with them.

We use Telcel and add a couple of hundred pesos to it occcasionally, but we live here full time. Babs is correct about its deal.

Thanks, makes sense on the dual SIM card requirement.

roni so you bought a phone for there and use the Telcel plan? We'll be spending more time soon and will need to go that route. I'll check into the plan mentioned to learn more...

We live in Merida year around. Would not make sense at all to have a US cell plan. Our telcel plan works fine for calling the US and Canada, but usually we use Skype or Facetime to communicate with folks out of Mexico.

I have no plans to return to the USA, or I might feel differently.

We each have one phone. Both are on Telcel. Amigos sin Fronteras is the what we use, but it is not a plan. I get a text when I have used up all my minutes and data and then I go down to a store and replenish it.

I use Amigo Optimo Sin Frontera and pay as I go. It's actually very simple.

1) make sure you have a balance and top up if necessary (millions of places to do it in Mexico, I do it online when out of Mexico)

2) Texts are billed at 0.88 pesos (less the 5 US cents) to anywhere in Mexico, US, or Canada (never tried anywhere else)

3) Calls are billed at the rates below depending on how much you've reloaded in the previous 30 days. Again, you can call anywhere in Mexico, US, or Canada

4) I add data as needed by this chart (you can literally buy it by the megabyte but buying it in chunks valid for a certain number of days is a far better deal

Hope this might help.

Thank you for the details! Heading out today to get a phone for use while here
(I assume I need to buy a phone from them and buy the minutes/data since I can't install a second chip in my us phone)
