Heard something troubling about Carboncitos

I got an email from one of my friends she and a friend of hers that went to Carboncitos a few nights ago. They were seated and ordered some beers and they did a bit of a show bringing them out (Standard fare for Carboncitos) but right before the beers came out the deliberately seated another couple really close to them. So when they were doing the show my friend saw the couple trying to pull stuff from from her friends purse they were caught red handed and bolted. However my friend is convinced the waiters were in on the attempted theft there were plenty of other seats available but moved a table right beside them so everything was within reach.

Lesson learned as with anywhere always keep an eye on your stuff. But if you go to Carboncitos you might just want to keep a closer eye on your stuff than usual.

Sucks if that's true but in this day and age if you don't have your stuff on lock down the entire time you are in a tourist area that's on you.

Agreed. Both of them should have known better. Both own places in PDC and have logged significant time here for years. But I thought I'd toss it out there for others as a reminder very few places are safe.

Although on the other side of the coin last time we were at El Fogon (across from Mega) My wife left a package on a chair the wait staff chased us down to the street to make sure we didn't forget our package.

Not surprised at all. It seems like everything on 5th is a hustle.

In fairness, I see it all the time where a host(ess) will sit another party right next to you in an empty restaurant. Always drives us nuts, but then it's been explained to me that sometimes the waiter from another 'zone' aren't in yet, or are on break, so that is why they do that.

It's a pretty thin accusation. But we'll be there in a couple of weeks (always our first stop) and if anyone trys to steal anything from my wife, I'm almost gonna feel sorry for those poor banditos if she catches them.

If you feel like you are being set up for the sting you probably were. The distraction of "the show" is an important part of the rip off. I get it quite a few times at gas stations due to all my travelling. Typically more than 2 persons serve you and while one fills the tank the other starts asking if the tires are full or if you need oil and sometimes a third person asks if you are going to tip for the window wash. The pump clicks out right at that time at 200 pesos and the guy says oh right you wanted it full and in all this he doesn't reset to cero's even though he will tell you later he did. I once even had a fourth guy ask me if I needed grease right at the same time. Its all about distraction, smoke and mirrors and everyone will get a cut of what they manage to take you for.

Its easy to say now after the fact that they should have got up and left right away after telling the manager the staff and their accomplices tried to steal from them but such things don't occur to you at the time.

For me, when the pump clicks out at 200 I just say that's good enough, pay 200 and go to the next place. Lessons learned.

I always chalked it up to them wanting to limit how far they had to walk.

I like your idea to stop at 200 pesos - and the best way to make that work is get out of the car, go to the pump, and check that it's set at zero before you tell them how much to pump. Ordering from inside the car invites the scam you can't see...

I open the door, pull the gas cap latch and get out of the car. I tell the attendant what I want. He or she always points out when the ceros show up. I stand there while they pump the gas and clean the windows. I pay them and give them a tip.

Only one person has tried to rip me off in 4 years. He tried to pull the 500 for 50 spam. I laughed at him and told him I gave him 500, not 50. He looked confused and then I told him again and asked to talk to the jefe. He gave me my change from the 500 and we departed with no hard feelings.

It helps to speak Spanish.

I have had nothing more than taxi drivers trying to fleece a bit here and there. I do enjoy the luxury of being a big guy though.

Carboncitos

Well we must say we at Carboncitos are a little disappointed and it’s sad how in this day and misinformation can spread so fast but here we are to clear things up.

I had already been in touch with Jackie Specht who was with this particular table and as she mentioned an incident had occurred and said our staff was involved.

I explained to insinuate that our staff was involved especially with out any proof is not correct or fair.

I had mentioned how our staff are long term employees and do quite well for we are one of the busiest restaurants in Playa.

I addition Carboncitos has been here 14 years without incident.... that statement alone speaks for itself.

Regardless , after our conversation she agreed and had removed her review.

I explained that we would look into this further and we did, and below is a copy of the message we sent to Jackie about this situation.

Hi Jackie

Thanks for removing review from Facebook, we appreciate it

Anyway some interesting things occurred, and after viewing our cameras for a while there were two possibilities, 1 right before the drink went down a blonde woman walked right behind your group and paused, unfortunately where our camera is located a new fan was installed was hard to determine for my view was through the grill if the fan.

So the person who was in your group closest to the street and the wall of course was in the grill view.

Interesting enough, there was no one seated behind you until approx. 15 minutes after beer drop, drop was 20:38 and the people seated was 20:53.

I noticed the person in your group seated in view through grill looked like she dropped or knocked over something got up and seemed like she was looking on the floor for something as well as the 2 people behind her.

not sure what transpired here but this could have been when it happened as well for they left a few minutes after this and never ordered.

This incident had transpired approx. 20 minutes after beer drop so I will have to rule out any hanky panky going on with our staff.

Sorry for your inconvenience, but in the end I apperciate you bringing it to our attenetion, I like to know whats going here at all times and of course you now see as wel we run a tight ship here ...I am an easy going guy but I am also a no nonsense kind of guy.

Again thanks for letting us know and we hope to see you next time.

Sincerely, Steven

Well that about sums it up and we hope the chismosas are convinced... lol

Obviously Playa is changing, it is also a very popular tourist zone , and like all tourist zones we should always be aware of our surroundings but if an incident should occur here at Carboncitos you can be assured we will always look into it much deeper.

Now with that said, time to drink Margaritas

Thanks for listening

Steven
