car rental

Recommendations on car rental companies please. My condo is in the north end of Playa. Want to rent a car for a couple of days to go to Tulum etc. What can we expect to pay per day? Is it imperative to get take the insurance? Any advice on things to be cautious about would be appreciated.

ISIS or America (cheaper), we use ISIS when we can as Edgar is excellent. You'll find a ton more feedback on rental cars on travel forums like trip advisor's Playa Del Carmen forum.

Top Questions section in TA...
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForu...Peninsula.html

We always get the insurance that is included in the quote, and the price is ~$40+ $US/day for a car depending on the vehicle.

We have used American Car Rental for years. Never had any problems. Insurances are included, except for tire and glass, which is optional. I have never found a better price, myself. My recommendation is, YES, insurances are necessary.

Their Playa office is on the north end, so would be convenient for you. The price will depend on the vehicle you choose. I book on their website, and get the quote in Pesos.

Very important - if you request a quote from America, select the "MXN" (peso) currency option as that will be 25% - 30% lower than the quote provided in $US.

As noted tire and glass coverage is extra, as is road service which you should add if you get the others.

Sorry - meant to add that Edgar will deliver and pick up the vehicle while America will drive you to their office.

In addition to American, (who we've used, and been satisfied), I've heard good things about this company:Avant Rent A Car in Cancun, Playa del Carmen & Riviera Maya

A year, or so ago, I got a quote from Avant, and at that time, they were charging extra for rentals, other than at the airport. Also, have to email for a quote, and if you reserve without a quote, you have to enter cc information. I don’t care for that.

Just a note on Avant for anyone renting at the airport, they no longer meet you at the airport so you will shuttle to their office as with America. And because they are Cancun-based I don't believe they are an option for a rental in Playa for the you but I'm not sure. They are also much more expensive than America and EasyWay. GoCarrito is also a good option in Playa (and they have delivered to our resort outside Playa) but they are pricier than America...
America is almost always the cheapest and their service is second only to ISIS...

3 seconds on their website told me that in fact I can pick up a car in Playa.

Rental of a Chev Aveo (automatic transmission),for a week beginning March 15 will cost you $300.00 from America, and $230.00 from Avant. Not sure where you got your pricing information. I got mine from their respective websites. That little exercise took 2 minutes.

You want Easy Way, which 10 years ago was a great company? Be my guest, but please don't post on this forum about how your credit card was compromised.

Yes you should always compare quotes between the top agencies (America, ISIS, EasyWay, Avant, etc) as prices do change.

WR, Avant may be more competitive now and that's good. All I can say from our experience is Avant was consistently the highest priced when I've quoted them. Over the last 4 years they and ISIS were very close, while America was always much lower so we often used America and took the shuttle. But because we are now carrying a ton of stuff down to our place and the shuttle to an office is a pain I will pay a little extra for the convenience of terminal delivery and Edgar is always waiting for us. We have a 4-week rental from ISIS right now in fact until we buy a vehicle. And if you find a lower price just negotiate with Edgar. I've tried that with Avant or America...

Oviously we're biased toward ISIS as so many others are...

I have sent a request for a quote to Avant, so I will report back the comparison between them and American for the time frame we have booked.

Reporting back, as I have received the quote from Avant. This is for exact dates, times, and vehicle.

American $259
Avant $382

Avant does charge a $35 fee to pick up, and drop off in Playa.

Just reserved our two-week rental with Avant Car Rental. I'm paying $36.87 USD/day including all taxes and insurances. Can you rent for less? Probably, and if paying the least amount possible is your #1 priority, perhaps Avant is not for you.

I've been renting and driving this region for over 25 years, and have unfortunately had to use many rental agencies over those years, including some mentioned here, like Easyway & America Car Rental. I'll never rent from either of those again.

Thus far, Avant wins hands down. Are they the cheapest? Perhaps not, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Like waiting in smelly office for over an hour completing paperwork, and then getting a slammer for a car. Yup, that's America. Or, having a knobshine literally, yes literally, crawling under the car looking for anything to cite against us.

Unless Avant drops the ball, I'll continue doing business with them.

I was just giving what information I had, and trying to be helpful to the op. I could care less who people use.

I can honestly say, never had any of those issues with American. To each his own, and that is why there are so many choices.

Tip: don’t take Internet forum posts personally. No harm nor foul.

Same here.

That being said, I requested a quote yesterday as well, and the price that came back was considerably higher that the price listed on their website, which I found more than a little annoying.
