Two Sisters Travelin'
Pre-ramble:
Tyramania has been my sister almost as long as I can remember. I say “almost” because I’m the one that brave folks call “the older one”. For about the last (mumble) years, one of our running comments when we’re having a grand ole time has always been |

Careful now, Trish....We've both got years of ammunition to throw out there. I give you the same warning I gave sctx....don't be firing the first shot
Actually, I'm looking forward to reading your trip report.... - Tyra (the younger one) |

It's not just my report, remember. You were there, too. I'm just now finishing up the next part... Maybe you'll have a few memories to throw in. ![]() |

pre-planning party
I think it all started last summer while Tyra & I were sitting
with a bunch of our family at our Mothers-Daughters-Sisters-Cousins family reunion (that’s right, a reunion for just the “wimmin folk”). When that began many moons ago, it was a large group – not a group of large women, just a lot of them - almost like a herd but without the bulls & steers – but has since dwindled down to more like a small gaggle. So everyone is talking at once & waving their beers and cigarettes in the air, trying to decide who’d be in charge of planning the trip for 2004, how we’d do it differently next time so that the person in charge didn’t get screwed out of any money |

Will we ever get to Playa? (Thursday 05-13-04)
Tyra performed her planning magic
. Only a few minor glitches along the way, although no deal-breakers. My hat’s off to her for all her hard work, although I think she’s probably marked “travel agent” off her what-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up list . You know its got to be tough to wrangle 13 people off to Playa! Anyway, all the rooms were booked, flight arrangements made 2 months in advance. Of course, flight times changed for both airlines that the 4 of us from Austin had reservations on. I quickly learned that airline carriers don’t always play together well, resulting in my purchase of some one-way tickets on yet another carrier to get us to DFW with time to spare for the flight then to Cancun. The events of that morning I would actually rather forget; its a story for another time… oversleeping, scolded by ticket agents, held flights, trying to rush through security (you just can’t hurry those guys!), missed flights, back through security, etc. All said & done, we finally met up with Tyra and the rest of the clan in DFW, only to find out that the flight to Cancun didn’t get off the ground until an hour after it was scheduled, so the disasters of the morning were all for naught The arrival in Cancun was uneventful, until Tyra started off the plane across the tarmac at a very quick pace to the dreaded “red light” area; she was a woman on a mission. I was beginning to think that she had had enough of everyone already and she was leaving us to fend for ourselves, . We were able to glean that he didn’t even know the name of the hotels. Great! More vacation time spent with both vans taking scenic tours of the 2 Cancun terminals. Don’t know how, but he was finally located. (I think that Tyra will require him to be equipped with GPS if we do this again!) We were on our way down the road, stopping at Puerto Morelos for the all-time stress reliever – beer – and made it to our home away from home. Tyra had booked 2 apartments at Chichan Baal Kah for she & I and my daughter & son in law & a friend of theirs, and 2 condos at Villa Sacbe for the rest of the group. Unloading all the people and baggage at the two places kinda reminded me of the Keystone Cops. Everyone somewhat settles in, Tyra takes a few on a field trip to the grocery store, and we all decide we’re hungry. Walked the few steps down the street from Villa Sacbe to La Siesta. The big mistake of the evening was 11 of us sitting down at one long table! Beer & tequila shots were coming from the bar faster than anyone could count. Food was ordered, and more beer while we waited. It wasn’t long before I was wishing we had sat at separate tables – some of the clan were acting like tourists! Getting the bill and everyone throwing out money was pretty much a cluster… |

It sounds as if there may be a need for 2 trip reports and then perhaps a congress, if you will, to glean from each report the final TR for posterity's sake...
Isn't it a rather interesting thing that between 2 people who shared similar experiences in such close proximity, can have such DIVERGENT claims on reality? |

Friday 05-14-04
We all woke up with a bit of an emotional hangover :o , but at least the sun was shining, and the coffee tasted sooooo good. About half the group had scheduled a fishing trip for that morning, and Tyra & I hoped the group woke up in time to catch their transportation. After a quick breakfast snack of chocolate sugar wafers, she loaded up her backpack to go check on them, and then was off to run a few errands – look up a friend or two, check her email to make sure her puppies were OK. I lathered myself with sunscreen and wiggled into my bathing suit to go to the beach with Manda & Aaron (my daughter & son in law), & Tina (my adopted daughter for the trip – remember, this was family). We ended up at the Tukan beach club and settled in on some chairs. A gorgeous day, we were in awe of everything around us. You don’t see this kind of scenery on the Texas Gulf Coast !! The mojitos were going down easily, and it was wonderful to have to do nothing but
reason! Still a few hours away, we made plans to meet up for happy hour at Espadas later in the evening, and decide …what to do for dinner . That left plenty of time to clean up, take a stroll down 5th for a little bit of shopping, and generally just soak up the atmosphere known as Playa del Carmen. It seemed to be well known to the shopkeepers that we were from Texas before we even walked in. I kept looking to see if anyone was wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed such, but after I stayed outside one of the shops to enjoy the breeze for just a little while longer and hearing the voices of the group inside, I realized that while you may take the girls out of Texas, you just can’t take the Texas out of the girls! Guess it was that West Texas twang coming out! Happy hour at Espadas and the entire group showed up. We all decided that was a good place to eat – the Brazilian steaks sounded wonderful and the prices were extremely reasonable. I think that the waiters must have been friends of the people from La Siesta, because not only did they split us up into 2 tables, but even offered to give us separate checks before we asked! Wow! Worked great. Dinner was an exceptional experience! All the different meats sliced right to your plate off of long swords. The service was great, and we all left with full tummies! After a few more adult beverages at the swing bar across the street, a little more wandering and shopping, the night was declared a success. |
