One of the waaaay exciting things we did occasionally was go to a drive-up A&W restaurant (can't recall what town it was) where the girls would come out to your car to wait on you (albeit not on rollerskates). The ol' tray on the window of the car next to Dad. Those hamburgers and root beers were sooooo good!!! A wonderful, happy memory...... such a treat for us kids..... I also remember a couple of times when Dad would forget the process and almost drive away with the tray still hanging on the car!!

Gee, I was a lucky kid.....
Same for us Karen....I recall the A&W days of youth but what I REALLY remember from my earliest recollections was a place called "Dog 'n Suds"...I'm sure there were others very similar, but as for "chains" that was it for me...we had other drive-ins that were Mom and Pop operations and changed hands until they died off...

This is scary Bumper - I only missed 2!! But then, maybe growing up in Montreal I don't think we ever had "Blackjack Chewing Gum" or "Butch Wax" (whatever that was!!) As for the S&H stamps, I don't remember them either from my childhood (although I know what they were) , but we sure had Gold Bond Stamps. My mother would get scads of them at the IGA each week and when we got home she'd have us young'uns lick them and stick them in a book. Yech!! I can't rememebr what she would exchange them for, but I'm willing to bet it was for some pretty classy stuff that we REALLY needed! How about Black Cat cigarettes - did you have them in Winnipeg? And how about cigarettes in a tin?

Yep & yep. I grew up in a working class neighbourhood though, so most of the smokers didn't enjoy "tailor-mades", just "rollies". I was always impressed as Hell watching an experienced smoker roll his own with just one hand. The tobacco always came in tins that they transferred to pouches. Export A, Black Cat, Players, Sportsman, and Buckingham are the brands I remember best. Every garage or basement workshop you ever went in to was lined with tobacco tins filled with nails and screws. usually all one colour, depending on what brand the household's smokers used.

We still have an A&W. They are only open during the summer. Still wait on you in the car. Not sure about the rollerskates, I've been going to Hooters instead. Bigger servings.

Bigger whats??

I suppose if you had a Hooter's waitress on roller skates, that would be what...a dolly on a trolley?

Thumbs up

New Carlisle, Ohio still has the car hops coming to your car, the trays hanging off, and no speakers. It's called the Wot-a-Dog. Haven't been there in about 20 years.....but it's still there.
