Transportation From Mayan Palace

We're planning a trip to PDC & will be staying at the Mayan Palace. Looks like the cab fare is $17 U.S. ea way, question is; do the local busses run up that way & what kind of hassle will it be getting to & from PDC from there. The resort isn't the attraction, PDC is, & we will want to spend most of our time there or having fun it the area. Thanks for any info you can provide

Hi Birdman. We'll be staying at the Mayan Palace, too. From what I've read we can take a bus from our hotel to Playa del Carmen for much less. I've been curious about this, too. I need to read up on it more. I see you live in Washington, too. My husband and I will be leaving for Mexico on July 16th. When are you going?

We stayed at the Mayan Pal;ace two weeks ago. We had the shuttle take us to the main gate and went across the highway to wait for the bus. Be patient and ignore the taxi's if you want to go cheap. It was $1 per person and the bus drops you off at the bus station on 5th Street ( right where you need to be) the ferry to Cozmel is 1 block down and costs $15/person 1 way. It is worth it. buses leave the bus station each hour to take you back. They were late sometimes and it was hard to get the people to tell us why. We went there 3 days. the first time to buy beer and food for our room, the second time to go to Cozmel and the third day we shopped in the rain. Since the resort has a reef, it was the only time we got to see the white beaches and blue water. We also took the bus to Cancun. It was not really worth it, but we had friends who had never been before.

Kelgirl, What did you think of the Mayan Palace? I am torn between a couple of resorts in the PDC area and I am looking for opinions. Did you like the resort? How was the beach? Could you go in the ocean and swim? Food? Was the room nice? How far from PDC? Thanks for the info.

kelgirl: re Cozumel ferry, are you sure you didn't pay approx $15 per person return? We paid about $30 return for 2 six months ago.

Our trip to Cozmel was $15/person each way so a total of $30.00 roundtrip.
We stayed at the Grand Mayan. Our rooms were fabulous. Of course they are new. We did see the other rooms and they looked very nice too. The pool was right on the ocean, but unforately as many have said, the beach is not swimmable. We went in up to our knees and looked for shells. So if you are looking for a beautiful beach, you won't find it there. The pool was great. They say they are an all inclusive resort, but what that really means is you charge everything to your room and pay the bill at check out. The drinks were expensive and weak. We went to PDC and got beer and margarita mix and made our own. If you pay attention to the happy hour times, you can get 2 for 1. The breakfast buffet was great and so were the other places to eat. We had good food all week. It was actually cheaper to have room service brought to our room than to go down and eat. We did that a couple mornings and a dinner. They add the tip into all the bills. Of course, they will offer you $ and a 15% discount on all your food if you go on the tour. They say 90 minutes, but if you are polite and ask questions, it is about 4 hours including a free breakfast. Our group all wnet on the tour and ate breakfast and when they started talking prices our friends excused themselves. Are you exchanging into Mayan?
Mayan was about 20 minutes by public bus to PDC. We found it very easy to go there. If you plan on going to PDC and other places to eat, you might like the Mayan. Other places you will be stuck with paying the all-inclusive up front.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

Kelgirl, thanks for the info. We are exchanging in. I didn't want to get locked into an all-inclusive, we like to eat in different places. We will have a car so transportation is not a problem. Could you walk to a beach with water access? We love to be in the ocean and need our fix. I believe there is construction going on at the resort, was it bothersome?

Thanks for your help.

There was construction, but it didn't really bother us. My husband and his friends enjoyed watching them each morning as they had their coffee. we also had ver heavy rains and they got flooded out of working the last couple days. There is also construction on their new spa and gym, but they have it closed off with a wall so it isn't a bother either. We walked to the left of the resort about 10 minutes and didn't see a usable beach, however to the right around the corner there appeared to be one. Others have said they were able to access a beach within a 5 minute walk. Mayan Palace has several chairs on the beach and we did enjoy sitting out there and listening to the ocean. For those who are interested, I posted pictures of the Gran Mayan room in the member galleries. I have others of the pool if you are interested.
I agree about the site. It helped me before we went down. I wanted to know the closest grocery to get things for our room. You will have a great time with a car. Our sales girl (Cindy ) is from PDC and she told us about all sorts of neat places down the road to go to but we did not have a car. Next time we plan on exploring (yes, we did purchase, and will definitely be back very soon).

Is your room in the Grand Mayan or the Mayan Palace? If it is in the Grand Mayan, I can tell you that it is on the 2 floor. There wer only three buildings completed when we were there. Non have ocean views. Some rooms in the Mayan Palace have a view of the pool and you can see the ocean.
