I too am thinking of getting an MP3 player "a la" i-pod.

Here is the big question: Where do you get your MP3 songs to put into a MP3 player that can hold THOUSANDS of songs??
If your like me and have NO cd's what do you do to load your MP3 with your favorites??

iTunes Music Store is searchable, plus you get to listen to a 30 second snippet of each song available on the store. If you like the song, download it and costs you a buck. It's better than free since you are bound to get some good karma by supporting these artists and not stealing their work.

WOW....my math is not so good, but figure that if i want to "stuff" my 1000 songs into my "Super MP3 player".....that works out to about......$1000 dollars.......forget it!

Electra: go to zeropaid.com and look around. you'll find the most popular file trading software.

I stacked up lots of Karma buying thousands of CDs and Albums over the years... I don't want to talk about what happened to them.

Our hunt for two iPod minis has, so far, been unsuccessful. If you see two on the shelf, buy them and let me know so I can cancel the other orders I have placed. Colors can be anything, with pink and green at the top of the chart.

Thanks for the advice!

I have NOT seen the iPod mini's here. (we don't even have pedometers in the "specially marked boxes of Special K"....not available in Canada) I have seen the regular iPods.
Hey, I heard the batteries are not so good in the iPod. Has that problem been solved??

I think the big stink was that you couldn't easily replace them. Many places now offer this service, and instructions for doing it yourself are all over the net.

Probably ninety percent of the music on my iPod are from my own CDs. Even at only 10 bucks to download a CD (via iTunes Music Store) I still often times prefer to buy the CD just for the liner notes.

On a side note, I have found it difficult to listen to audiobooks on my iPod. I find myself spacing out too much wondering what was said for the past ten minutes. Guess I'm not an auditory learner.

James, we won't be in PDC until Thanksgiving, so hopefully your Mini iPod situation will be handled by then, but let me know if I need to bring a couple at that time.

You just have to condition the batteries to avoid any issues. Just charge to 100% then let it drain completely (3-5 times), then you can do whatever. I've had mine for about 6 months, and it's awesome!

problems arise after about 18 months, apparently. Even with proper charging methods (which don't make a big difference with all battery types) batteries only last so long.

This site was the big break-out expose.

edit: I looked around and found this article that actually recommends not fully discharging a lithium ion battery, the type in the iPods. It also states that lithium ion batteries are "memory free." I haven't checked other sources, so take that for what it's worth. Luckily, an iPod isn't a pacemaker or anything important, and the replacement kits are cheap and self-serve nowadays.

My biggest issue with the download services (besides that cost, which at a buck a song is way too much for a file) is the file format and quality. iTunes makes you use their format (AAC, I think) at their bitrate. With hard drive space so cheap, I rip at high variable bitrates for archival quality. I actually prefer the lossless formats.
