Chichen Itza/ Uxmal

I would like to know the distance between Chichen and Uxmal.I am planning on staying overnight near Chichen for the night show and the early morning experience and then would like to drive to Uxmal for a tour and then back to PDC in the same day. Is this too much for one day?

I just discovered your website this morning and it is full of great info. I am an avid reader of locogringo and I will bookmark and read your website also.

Thanks.

You are considering a 117 mile journey from Chichen to Uxmal followed by a 250 mile return leg from Uxmal to Playa. Even though I am only a tourist, I have done a lot of driving in Southern Mexico and I would not consider driving to Uxmal and back to Playa in one day. Uxmal is well worth seeing, a well restored site with real Mayan architecture. It is a smaller, but nicer site than Chichen. I would stay overnight near Uxmal if I was to do Chichen and Uxmal “back to back”.

I agree with michaelholmes. We stayed at the Mision Uxmal hotel, and it was great. We took in the night sound & light show at the Uxmal ruins and then relaxed up on the rooftop patio in the dark and watched the stars ,back at the hotel. There is no town right around there and so there are no lights blocking the beautiful night sky. The only lights were those from the ruins. It was a wonderful place to stay. They have a nice breakfast buffet and great pool and lovely grounds. We went to both Chichen and Uxmal, and I'd have to say I liked Uxmal better!

Thanks for the info. I am more interested in the "quieter sites" so I am rethinking the trip to Chichen. So am I correct in thinking that Uxmal is 360 miles from PDC? If so I need to break that up. One night in Uxmal. Any suggestions for the other night? Preferrably near a site to be explored. I have been to Coba and loved it.

Perhaps a stay in Valladolid with a visit to Ek Balam? Valladolid is a beautiful colonial city. Ek Balam is one of my favorite ruins to visit. You can read more about Ek Balam in the read more => mundo maya section at the top of the page. Also I have 2 pages of photos from our visit to Ek Balam in December 2002 on my home page => simply click on my username to the left of this post and click on the link.

Uxmal accomodations

There are several nice hotels very near the ruins at Uxmal. I suggest the one right accross from the entrance, the name slips my mind, but it was very nice and was about $65 a night. This allows you to catch the night show at Uxmal. You might consider heading south from Tulum to Phillipe Carrelo and then heading northwest on the "Ruta Pucc" through Ticul, Ticax, and on to Uxmal for the afternoon and the night show. Then return to Villadolid the next day for Chichen and spend the night there. It's a very full but extremely interesting trip.
