hi emily, we stayed at "playa gaviatos"..booked it thru marcia addams..very helpful, she can be reached thru the isla forum..it was a small cottage right on the beach...about mid way on the island..short cab ride to town..altho we rented a golf cart for a few days..very clean, had a small kitchen on the "porch" a store just up the hill for beer, very inexpensive & private..one year we also stayed there for a few days & then the avalon for a couple days..nice rooms..kinda sterile..overpriced, but the beach there is gorgeous..wouldn't bother w/avalon again..too many nice hotels in town for a lot less...good luck

hi emily, it depends...my husband & i enjoyed the privacy of "our" beach...at playa gaviatos...we had no problem getting to town, taxis went by up the hill every few minutes..but if you are young & want to be in the thick of things, i would stay right in town...on north beach..lots of hotels to choose from..everything is compact & walkable..no need for taxis..it is up to you..t

I haven't stayed at the Kinbe, but its on our list of places we'd like to try. It's very popular with budget travelers. I don't think you'll have any problems as a woman traveling alone. Many people who post on this board do it often. You are an experienced traveler, so you know to just pay attention to what's around you. Playa is a very friendly place. The Kinbe Hotel is about 5 blocks from the bus station, so its walkable. Its on Calle 10. You can walk right up 5th Ave. where the cars can't drive, anyway, so I think walking would actually be easier than getting a cab if you think you can manage your luggage OK. You can also hire a trike guy to take your luggage while you walk, or they will take you too. They wait outside the bus station.
The collectivos are a very good way to get to Tulum and it is an easy walk from where they drop you off. Be sure to tell the driver you want to go to the ruins, not the town of Tulum. Search the forum for more info about collectivos if you need it. They are easy to use. The area around Calle 10 and Ave. 5, near your hotel, has some of the best watering holes in town. You will be within a block or so of the Tequila Barrel and Bar Ranita, two of the most popular with this forum crowd. A Playainfo gathering is a good place to meet new friends and there will likely be one while you are there. If no one else organizes one, YOU can . You'll have a wonderful time!Mave |

The hotels you can book through this site are a nice assortment at a variety of prices and you get the Playa Deal card with them, which will save you a bunch of money around town. Look above at the orange "pdc directory" for the list. Another good thing about booking here is you have James and Anna working for you if there are any problems. They take very good care of their forum folk.

Hotels
While we won't be staying there until Jan.05,I did exhaustive research on this site & others,& we booked the Riviera del Sol through this site. Just take a look at the playa deal card businesses & you can see you'd get a huge saving. Just check out the hotels & condos too that are here! You'll have a great time. Are you from N.H.? I think you are intrepid to have traveled so much alone. I traveled with my mom,& took my grand-mothers on many trips, friends, ex-husband, & lover, but never alone! Good for you!..
