I think he was referring to language groups, in fact he didn't Germanic which as I understand it is the language group for your country and Scandanavia in linguistic terms.
Nevertheless, I realised I knew practically nothing about Icelandic
so I looked up this article
http://www.iceland.is/media/Utgafa/Icelandic.pdf I found it fascinating. I think it's wonderful that you have what seems a great educational system that places emphasis on learning other languages. It is an area ,as I am sure you probably know, that US education in general has problems with.
