domestic beer..........

greetings, i know this is strange, i know it's crazy, but my husband doesn't want to stay at the barcelo maya because they only have domestic beer, that's mexican beer right, miller/bud, etc. would be the import........anyhoo, daniel says he has yet to find a mexican beer that he can drink for 5 days........

have tried searching around, and did go to the BM unofficial site, and i think i did see that.......domestic beer only......or something like that...........

i had my heart set on the IB quetzal, but i think the BM might be better for us due to our budget, but it's not such a great deal if we spend extra money on the beer.......i can live with corona and the like, but he cant........

thanks in advance for any help

Tesa, hi dont mean to intrude but have you considered not staying in an AI? the reason Im asking is because we took some friends down for the first time and they dont drink Mexican beer either...Although by the end of the trip they had fallen in love with Sol..They do sell Bud and the like in town on 5th ave...some places more $$ than other...I dont know what your budget is or if you have been to Playa before but I could give you some info on not doing AI.....We have stayed at the IB and the Reef Club before so we have experience in both ways...Non AI isnt for everybody it just really depends on what your expectations are..Let me know if I can help any futher.

By the way we only drink Mexican Beer so i understand his concern on the American stuff...If they dont sell Mexican I dont drink!

domestic beer..........

thanks sunseekers, i thought i saw that the IB had import on their AI list.......

i did look at going the other way......but i thought that any money we might save, we would spend on beer and food anyway, since we can do alot of both!!

we have 2500 to spend on the honeymoon......

we both want a relaxing long weekend, with much lounging about and making merry..........MABY a day trip, but no hard plans....for sure snorkeling, it's something we both want .......the rest is up for grabs.......

i thought for our first trip to the area, we would be better off doing the AI thing, daniel has been all over the world with his business, but he has never been to a resort, so i thought that would be nice.....

I understand...its just that when you go AI you dont get to experience Playa the same way...You end spending 90% of the time at the resort...Can give you an example of $$

Pancho's hotel $70 a night for deluxe room
airfare Continental $308-338 R/T P/P
the rest is for food beer and fun..

That comes to @ $950.00 for 4 nights...
Leaves $1500.00 for tours, Beer, Food.(way better than buffet at resort)
Beer,Food,Snorkeling trips
Beer,Food Etc.Etc.

Just a thought....Everything is within walking distance....

I just spent 8 days there and we stayed at an AI. The first 3 days we spent being spoiled and lazy, not leaving the AI. The next 4 we did the Fat Cat Catamaran Tour; went to Playa and stayed late that night, meeting forum friends at Tequila Barrell; walked into Playa and did shopping, ate dinner; spent the entire day on Cozumel, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, hitting all the beach clubs; went to Tulum ruins, Oscar y Lalo's, eating lunch there. Not exactly what I would call "spending 90% of our time at the AI."

daniel has backpacked all over, last year, they (he and his runnin' buddies) went to turkey......he really wants to see how the other half lives.......he has never been to a resort.......he is really looking forward to it.....i on the other hand could swing either way......i see the $$ aspect......but then there is cabs and transfer, and spending all that time looking at the map going......"where?".........anyhoo, you guys have been super!! i have learned so much!! and i have seen just how much i don't know too......will talk with him, might be able to get him to go the non AI way, if he see's how much $$ we are likley to save, he might go for it.........

which guide books should we get if we do choose not to go AI??

i hear lonley planet has good ones, those are the ones that they used in turkey......

raining to beat the band here in houston.....wishing i was in the sun.....

Hey Tommy! I did the whole vacation on my own (with help from this site of course) I'm a planning freak. Researched for a year, got my mapchick maps, printed posts from the forum. I felt very comfortable striking out on my own.

But honestly, if I didn't have a child, I would never have stayed at an AI. But I wanted her to have a memorable time. She had so many kids to play with not just in the daytime on the beach, but at night. We took her to the "Kid's Show/Disco" three nights and it was just a joy to watch her have so much fun. The other 4 nights we were in either PDC, Cozumel, or heading back from Oscar y Lalo's. So she got the best of both worlds on the trip. I think we all did.

I'm thinking about a boutique hotel for our next trip, but I've kinda felt like there might not be many kids at the smaller hotels. Like they're more for couples. What's your experience been?
