Switched from RIU Playacar To Barcelo

Due to the overwhelming amount of negative information posted on this and several other sites about the RIU Playacar (A/C, management...etc) I switched our group (3 late twenties couples) to the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort for a short 3 night July 9-12 excursion.

I had a pretty good handle on what the RIU had to offer, but now I'm starting over at square one. Does anyone have good advice on rooms to request and how to do it? Activities recommended (on/off resort)? Any food recommendations? Distance to PDC and cab cost? Is there anything to do in Puerto Aventuras? Basically any "inside" inforamtion that would come in handy would be greaty appreciated. Thank You

Just got back from Barcelo -
Cab into playa cost $14 usd for three of us, took about 20 mintues I am guessing here....
My trip report was on this site and the Barcelo site if you want to read it with lots of links to pictures as well.

I thought the food at the Buffetts was great. I also did Capt Morgans and the Mexican A La Cartes - both were great...

You can book snorkel trips right at the dive shop at the Barcelo (we did not do this but wanted to) - but you can also snorkel right off the pier at the Barcelo as well.

Very pretty resort, great beach, with great service, you wont be disappointed.

We did not go into PAventuras - but I know you can do the Dolphin swim there if that sort of thing interest you.

As for rooms it will depend on where you want to be on the resort as it is sort of spread out.

Feel free to ask any questions -

I think you guys made a great choise. The RIU's are ok but Barcelo is much better in my opinion. I am on my 3rd trip to BArcelo Sept 4th, We also left the TEquila to go back to Barcelo.
www.unofficial-barcelo-maya.com is the best site and discussion board for Barcelo. Take Care and have a great trip. Looks like you were reading trip advisor I saw some nasty reviews on the Playacar. I do have to say in defence of the RIU's the service was top notch in our opinion so, but everyone has there own experiences, the airconditioning problem hopefully they have that one under controle. YOu will love BArcelo its a fabulous resort, with a great beach and layout. I recommend building #3 or #4 for being central to everything, but I would take any room in the house just to be there. Have a blast
