If you're coming down in the next few weeks...

Please be sure to bring bug spray/lotion with you. The recent heavy rains have inspired a torrent of mosquito breeding and you're not safe from them, even when you're in the surf. They are EVERYWHERE! So be sure you arm yourself with protection from them before you get here. You could be consumed before you even get to the store here to buy some!

I figured. We're coming down this Saturday, and I went out and bought two tubes of Ultrathon. The mosquitos are actually really horrendous here, too, in Minnesota, since we've also gotten alot of rain.

Ahhh... thanks, Tommy! Yeah, Mother Nature made it up to us in some gorgeous weather once the storms passed. It's been heaven here lately. But the buggies are NO fun at all!

Good luck to you guys... Start living your life this direction and, before you know it, you'll have made your own magic!

....since....?
....since....?

I've been there when they weren't that bad and I thought I was Gulliver run amok amongst a Lilliputian village of 3" to 5" Sikorsky Black Hawks....

We're coming July 3rd, so I guess there will be mosquitos then too......funny we don't have them here in PA, and it's been raining almost every day, we had 8 inches in a month, so it feels like a rainforest lately...but no mosquitos - I wonder what happened to them? Anyway, isn't there a breeze off the ocean to blow them away when you are near the beach? But.... thanks for the good advice, my daughter will be freaked out - she hates bugs! So that should be fun to deal with....ha, ha!

No mosquitos in Bell Buckle, so far this year, either. I've commented on it to friends. Kinda wierd.

They cart us away here at home. Always a problem in the hot, humid south. But, still bringing lots of bug repellent anyway. For some reason, they bugs LOVE me....I think I've got really good blood or something!

Well, some folks recommend environmentally safe repellents. But at home, we have to break out the heavy-duty chemical warefare....we use either Cutter's or Deep Woods Off. The latter can be bought in wipie cloths, which I like.

Perhaps others have some suggestions better suited for the area.

This year, the bugs up here are so big they just don't bite you. they pick you up and carry you away

Perfect bug weather is lots of rain followed by hot, dry, preferably windless weather...just like in Paamul it seems.

I just hope they'll have their fill of red juice by the time we get there on July 3rd.

If not, I guess we'll just stick close to shore, snorkel a lot and push the Coba visit to the second week.

I would recommend "Off Skintastic" pump bottle (Not a pressurized can). I believe the DEET is in at about 7.5 % and thats about all you really need. there is also a version for children that has slightly less DEET. Get the one in the spray bottle, it allows you to spray it on clothes, bedding etc. DEET is effectively deters mites, fleas bedbugs etc. For use on the face, spray it in you hand first!
Here is a tip: Apply the product as normal but be sure to cover the back of your arms, back of your neck, forehead and jaw and well up your leg if wearing shorts and up your arms under the sleeves. Once you have your shoes/socks on spray them too with the repellent. Tests have been done that show that mosquitos have a low appoach (especially if sitting at a table).
Good luck

Off Skintastic is what I use too - and this is mosquitos country down here !!!!

Electra gave you some excellent advice, spray your clothes as well as the skin, it really helps and gives you that extra layer of protection.

I'm shocked to hear about the mosquitos. I didn't know about them until I read this forum. Is it as bad as you are saying? We will be in PDC in July with our children. Do we really need to spray ourselves everytime we go out??
