Somebody - we won't say who - indicated on another thread that something made their brain itch. Another somebody - identity also not revealed - responded that an itchy brain was a good thing. I'm in complete accord with that philosophy. Maybe these will have you going for the mental calamine lotion.
Tough Test 1 1. How much more available capacity is there in twenty four-gallon cans that are half full than in twenty-four gallon cans that are half empty? 2. Who was The Mad Monk of Moscow? 3. A major painting job can be completed by 4 painters in 45 days. If 16 more painters join the team 10 days after work has started on the project, then how many more days are required to complete the job? 4. What secret agent is obviously only half the man Max is on Get Smart? 7. A carpenter needs to affix a 25" x 25" square metal plate to a wooden board. The carpenter uses nails all along the edges of the square in such a manner that there are 26 nails on each side of the square. Each nail is the same distance from the neighbouring nails. How many nails does the carpenter use? 8. How many times have the Olympic Games been held in Africa? 9. Teacher: You appeared for 10 quizzes, and your average mark in them was 82. Student: How did I fare in English? Teacher: Well, your average in English language and English literature is 54. Student: So how was my average performance in the remaining subjects? Teacher: I’m sure you can figure that out for yourself. 10. Whose autobiography is entitled First Lady From Plains? Answers after I figure you've stewed for a while. |

Maybe if that blue crayon that I stuffed up my left nostril comes out (it was such a pretty color and I wanted to keep it to myself), then I'll push that in there and maybe the pencil will show itself. It might be the Shrek eraser that's making its re-entry more cumbersome.
I tried the hopping on one foot thing but all it did was almost dislodge my crayon (and I'm not commited yet to giving it up.) ***sniff*** ***sniff*** |

Okay.. Here goes nothing. Please don't lose all remaining (if any) respect you have for me for the following attempts at real answers. I know someone above already answered, but I didn't look. Really.

Karen? You there, Karen?? Seek professional help, or at the very least, counselling. It may be too late, but psychological medicine has made remarkable strides in recent years. |

Whoa!!!!! The blue crayon is now safely back in the desk drawer, along with my other favorites. Apparently Red Dye #2 (left over from the good ol' days of asbestos insulation, bicycle riding with no helmet, and kids who go home when the street lights come on) was an ingredient in my wonderful blue crayon and was messing up my usually clear-headed thought process. Didn't mean to worry anyone, especially you, Mr. Bump. Oh. And sorry for that misguided comment about the cans in the sand (see other thread).I'm stickin' to snortin' the yellow crayons from now on. ![]() Last edited by Nerak936 : 06-24-2004 at 06:16 AM. |

Thanks, Cuffed. Was feelin' perhaps that I'd crossed a line with that one. Was half expecting a slap-upside-the-head from James or Anna. Or somebody! Sometimes the mouth (keyboard) kicks in before the brain can catch up. Must be that pencil and Shrek eraser that's still bouncin' around in there..... :p |

Okay, I guess it's been long enough. The answers follow. I hope you folks are actually giving these things a decent shot before giving in and flipping to the back of the book for salvation. By the way, Tough Test 2 is "in the can", so may appear at any time.
Tough Test 1 - Answers 1. 28 gallons. Twenty four-gallon cans = 80 gallons x ½ = 40 gallons Twenty-four gallon cans = 24 gallons x ½ = 12 gallons Difference = 28 gallons 2. Rasputin 3. 7 days Total effort required by 4 painters for 45 days = 4 x 45 = 180 man-days Initial effort by 4 painters for 10 days = 4 x 10 = 40 man-days Job still requires 180-40 = 140 man-days, and there are 20 painters available to do it. Completing the project requires 140 man-days ÷ 20 painters = 7 days 4. Brazil 5. Beth is 6, Jo is 22 6. Agent 43 7. 100 nails The four corners of the scale have one nail each. Each side of the square now requires 24 nails. (Excluding the four corners). Thus, the total number of nails required would be 4 + (4 x 24) = 100 nails 8. None 9. 89 Total marks in 10 subjects = 10 x 82 = 820 Total marks in two English subjects = 2 x 54 = 108 Total marks in eight remaining subjects = 820 - 108 = 712 Average mark in remaining 8 subjects = 712 ÷ 8 = 89 10.
