Yes we are. Since we both toil at colleges, we get some days off that are not vacation. Another couple, who are also academics, have talked about it. Michael is a professor, so he has less schedule flexibility. I think we would come down sometime between the 18th and 21st and stay till sometime after Christmas, maybe as late as January 2.

We'll decide something in the next week or two. We aren't great big party animals, but we'd get around some. Maybe Keith and I could grill/smoke up some really good food Maybe the first annual Playa Holiday smoke-off .

Hmmmmm. Sounds like a tastey idea! I'm always up for good food, especially when someone else is doing the cooking. The condo we're renting conveniently has a community grill, pool table and pool. I believe we have the makings of a Smokin' Dinner Party.

Party animals? Who us? Boy do we have you fooled. Our bark is definitely worse than our bite. We just like to talk like we can still party the way did when we were kids.

Not to sound like a typical newbie, but what are water temps like for snorkeling around that time of year? That's our family acitvity of preference.
Hubby has just finished up cancer treatments, and would be a year clear around New Year's time. We were thinking PDC would be a nice place to commemorate his "rebirth"; and would like to meet everyone.

Because if you did party the way we did when we were kids, you would end up as just a chalk outline on the ground ??? :p

I find the water temperature very comfortable that time of year. It is not bathtub warm like it is during the summer. I have tried to find somewhere that records water temps and have not had much luck. The closest I have come, is that the water is always in a 10 degree range. (as soon as you say always someone will come up with an exception)

I’ve never noticed that the water is cooler in December and January.
It is slightly cooler, but you will not notice any difference. There will be no shortage of snorkelers when the Fat Cat docks in a choice snorkel spot on December 30th. Book your air tickets now and join us for all one of the best Playa Vacations ever.

MWC, we've always found the water fine for snorkeling in December and January --- not too cold at all. Actually, I think it's the perfect temperature. Hope you and the hubby decide to join us. I need to pass along the pop quiz prize book to you and that would be a perfect time to do it. Plus we'd love to meet the both of you!

Wohoo! We also booked our airfare for NYE in Playa!!!!!!!!! $540 RT out of Ontario, California on Aero Mexico. It's a red eye leaving at 11:50PM on the 26th and we will have short lay overs in Guadalajara and Mexico City. Not the most direct route but we will get to Cancun at 11:00 AM and can spend Christmas with the family here in CA. Maybe this info helps some LA area folks looking for lower airfare. I booked through Orbitz and have the tickets in hand already. We have been straying a bit from the Riviera Maya and spent last NYE in Costa Rica and went to Zihuatanejo in April but we are BACK on track. Just had to explore some other beautiful spots in the World in between (glad we did). Here is the embarassing part. Since the NYE trip has to be on a low budget we will be staying in a timeshare we exchanged with ours in Dana Point in "CANCUN" (yuck) at least part of the time. We will be at Hacienda Chichen with Michaels Family on the 28th and be on the Fat Cat on the 30th. We will be booking a room for the 30th and 31st in Playa so we can meet and party with everyone and we fly home on the first probably with hang over. Can't wait to meet all of you and see old friends again. Has anyone found good rental car rates???? The prices I have found so far are around $38 a day for a Mini Car no AC and normaly we pay around $19-25 for the same car. Does anyone have a tip? We would like to rent by the airport and also return there. Michael I already checked your two recomendations and they are very high as well. I also could use a tip on what the best boat tour is over to Isla Contoy from Cancun and the website so I can make reservations. On another note we will be along the Riviera Maya and Playa for a week over Laborday as well!!!!

Now listen up here.....In the world I inhabit, there is nothing embarassing about a good deal, rather, it should be a point of pride. . Course, that attitude has caused one or two people to suggest that I am...no way to put this delicately...cheap, but I don't mind .

Roni! I am so glad you posted that. In order to go on more trips I also..... "ahem" tend to be "cheap". On other trips we splurge. However, if it is between not going to Playa or making it cheap. I go for cheap anytime!!!!
I found the info on Isla Contoy already and will be going with Kolumbus Tours. Even so poor Fritz the Stingray seems to have pased away.

Woohoo is right!!! This is shaping up to be a wonderful holiday season already! Terrific news Munichchick!

And for all you cheap, delightfully frugal, miserly, tightwads.... you're not alone.... my motto is "If it's not on sale, I don't buy it." I rarely ever pay full price for anything. Shop the off price stores, clearance racks, consignment shops, and Good Will/Salvation Army stores. Our whole house with the exception of one or two items has been furnished with finds from garage/tag/yard sales, consignment shops, estate sales, auctions, flea markets, antique stores and even other peep's garbage. Even our houses have all been fixer uppers.

Munichchick, try cheaptickets.com I just reserved a car (with AC) through them for $114 per week in Oct/Nov. The company is Avis and the rate much better than Avis web site. I have used cheaptickets before with no problems. I wish we could be there for the holidays, but have too many family commitments. So...Everybody, have fun!!!

Bingo on vacation request

So, I am going to be off work from 5:00 pm on December 17 until 8:00 am on January 3rd.

Have been researching flight costs, and have TravelFrom.com doing their looking. Initial plan calls for flying on/around December 20, staying 3 nights on Critter's scorpion-infested island (will PM you about a couple things within a day or so, Critter), and then on to Playa for a week or so and flying back on/around the end of year.

Excitement level--mild at this time.
