Talking FORUM FUN FEATURE!! Tough Test 2

Okay, so not real tough. But maybe you've got a little time to kill on a lazy Sunday.

Tough Test 2

1. Whose third wife was Calpurnia?

2. Grandfather demands that his eggs be boiled for exactly 15 minutes, no more, no less. One day he asks that you prepare breakfast for him, and the only timepieces in the house are two hour glasses. The larger hour glass takes 11 minutes for all the sand to descend; the smaller glass takes 7 minutes. What do you do?

3. Which side did Adolphe Hitler part his hair on?

4. Suppose it takes 7 minutes for 7 monkeys to eat 7 bananas.
a) How many minutes would it take 3 monkeys to eat 3 bananas?
b) How many monkeys would it take to eat 49 bananas in 49 minutes?

5. What’s a loons favourite food? (And no, the answer is not, “What do you like to eat, Bumper?”)

6. Each child in a family has at least 2 brothers and 2 sisters. What is the smallest number of children the family can have, assuming it has both male and female children?

7. What French town distills most of the country’s brandy?

8. An Arab sheikh told his two sons to race their camels to a distant city, with the winner to inherit his vast fortune. The one whose camel is slower will win the contest. The brothers, after wandering aimlessly for days, ask a wise man for advise. After hearing the advise, they jump on the camels and race as fast as they can to the far-off city. What had the wise man suggested?

9. Was the character Max Klinger in the film version of M*A*S*H?

10. Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man’s father is my father’s son. Who is “that man?”

The answer to No. 2 is to turn both hour glasses over at the same time. When the sand runs out of the seven minute timer, put the egg in. There will then be four minutes left on the 11 minute timer. When the sand runs down on the 11 minute timer turn it over. After the sand runs out the egg will be down (4 minutes remained when egg put in + 11 minutes from second time).

As foor the Loon food, yellow perch seems to be the favorite fish of the Loon.

The Answers:

Tough Test 2 - Answers

1. Julius Caesar’s. Just “Caesar” isn’t good enough. There were several Caesars.

2. Start both hour glasses simultaneously. When the 7 minute timer runs out, place the egg into the boiling water. When the 11 minute timer runs out, restart it. When it runs out the second time, take the egg out.

3. The right.

4. a) 7 minutes
b) 7 monkeys

5. Fish

6. If each boy in the family has at least 2 brothers, then the smallest number of boys is 3. Similarly, if each girl in the family has at least 2 sisters, then the smallest number of girls is 3. Thus, the smallest number of children the family can have is 6.

7. Cognac

8. The wise man told them to switch camels.

9. No

10. My son

bumpas math quiz-ugh

Bump,# 10 so reminded me of my father-in-law,who trotted this out to each new generation. Another of his favorites was "The wind was west & west sailed we,with all sails set,how could that be? And "30 white horses upon a red hill, now they stamp, now they champ, now they stand still".Boy,I miss him,he enlivened every workday. ....Gail

True, Crit, Cognac is indeed a region in France, and production of the liquor is not particularly centralized. However, the region's major administrative and commercial centre is the town of Cognac.

Sorry, I don't get #8 yet. Can you explain why they would switch camels to have the slower one?

You see in the question that the winner of the contest was to be the one who's camel was slower, so they would each ride the other brother's camel as quickly as possible to make it the faster animal.

By switching camels the winner of the race would actually own the slower camel, which would mean he would inherit the fortune.

Don't claim any degree of expertise when it comes to the world of brandy, Cuff, but as they say...I know what I like. I presume you're not referring to the actual brand of brandy known as "Napoleon", which I've seen, but more to the generic designation "Napoleon" which is the term many people use for what is more correctly cognac? Like any booze, that's a very individual thing. I don't drink a lot of the stuff, but I admit I enjoy a good cognac from time to time. I'm a very traditional guy when it comes to brandy. I prefer it in a snifter, rather than straight up or with any sort of mixer. I like mine at body temperature, warmed in my own hand, rather than over one of those heaters, though I have one on my bar. I thoroughly enjoy the "nose" you get off a decent cognac before you even taste it.

My personal favourites don't run to the really high-end cognacs. I don't think my palate is educated enough to appreciate the $300 - $400 a bottle brands sufficiently to lay out that much money (retired, you know...fixed income). I've tasted a few of those over the years, and just can't tell the difference between what I buy, and what some sales type might buy for me when they were treating me to a good meal while trying to get a sizeable order. I have two brands on my bar. Courvoisier VS, and Remy Martin VSOP. The Remy is my best-loved choice, but the Courvoisier is great every-day hooch (and good enough for company). Having given you the benefit of my vast knowledge and insight, Cuff, bear in mind that with my valued opinion...and a couple of bucks...you can ride a bus. Your question has given me a notion though. I think you've convinced me to polish up my snifter for a little taste this evening...you silver-tongued devil, you. Thanks, buddy! Care to join me?

(Y'know, it's tragic being a lush with Alzheimers. Wanting a drink so bad, but not able to remember where I left the bottle.)
