Royal Porto Real Update
I had reservations for the Royal Porto Real for a week starting August 22. My friend just returned with photos which confirmed the reports of delayed construction. I switched my reservations to the Gala. My travel agent was unaware of any delays they were having. Check out the photos of the new Royal Porto Real I posted in the members gallery. The photos were taken 6/22/04. Remember the Grand Opening was originally scheduled for May, now they say July. Looks like it will be a while......

We just returned from Gran Porto Real and met many people that were booked into the Royal Real. There are rooms available on the street side and they were very nice. They had to use all the facilities at the Gran Porto though. We were told that the grand opening is in December.

First of all awesome web site. Second we are booked to stay at the Royal Porto Real in Jan 05. My heart is sinking. I hope they have made heaps of progress as of June when those pics. were posted. I'm just learning about the delays. If you go on the Royal official web they keep pushing their "Grand Opening" ahead. It is now slated for the end of Oct. I phoned their 800 number and spoke to a very nice lady with tons of info. She informed me that yes they are behind schedule; however by Jan. 05. Most of the ammenities would be availible. The pool is ready, but there is no water in it!! All of the rest. won't be ready but we are allowed to hop over to the Grand for any of our meals. She did say that upon completion that this hotel will be the flag ship of all the other Real hotels. Anyway, I'm waiting to hear back from my travel agent regarding this matter. He should be phoning me back tomorrow. Will keep in touch. Like to hear about any other info. regarding the Royal Porto Real. Thanks!!

Thanks everyone for their great info. It is hard to explain our situation. Not that we have money to burn or anything but we do spend money eating outside the resort and we like the option of eating at the resort. Like I said the European option is not for us but we still eat and spend money whether it is for dishes and glassware or whatever. We do not like to be on a schedule. Am I being to contradictory? This is our only vacation all year, (I know boo hoo) but this way has always been the best way for us. Maybe some day we will be more adventerous. I'm still waiting to hear back from out travel agent about the dalays at the Royal. We are excellent customers and he explained to us that we have the option of changing properties if need be. I will let you know the progress of this when it becomes availible to me. Have a great weekend everyone. AWESOME web. Sorry for the shout out!!

Hey everyone- yes I agree with that this site is very cool... I'm working on planning my honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen during April 2005, and this site has certainly been helpful!
I think the Royal Porto seems like a really good potential fit for our honeymoon- we like the idea of having the all-inclusive resort and a big honeymoon style new room (rooms look sweet, from what I can tell!), and we also definitely want to be able to walk into town all the time and explore, party, etc. So the RPR looks like it COULD be about perfect, if it's done in time and the place up up to speed... Sukidog, I also called the phone number at Real Resorts main web site and spoke with someone who was pretty helpful. She also talked about January now as being the "official" opening... I've read many reviews both good and bad about the Gran Porto Real, and it also looks like a possible fit for us. I'm really hoping that the Royal Porto progresses though- I would definitely be interested in that resort, but maybe not so much if the pool isn't open (and swim up bar!), or the retaurants aren't open or the beach-facing rooms are still under construction... I would say that if we had to use all the facilities at the Gran Porto, we might as well just stay there... But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!! Anyone that's got any updates on the Royal Porto (locals that have been by the place or people who maybe even have gotten to stay there), I would love to hear about them... Thanks in advance! Cheers to all- Lobo |

I returned from GPR on 26/9, people who were staying in the Royal were told it would be finished in December, though they didn't seem to be working too flat out on it from what I could see. Our room was right across from the new hotel and we didn't hear any construction noise.

Fat Tony, so there were people staying at the Royal? Could you please tell me the status of the hotel Royal? Is the pool open, are the rests. and bars open? Were the people from the Royal hopping over to use the facilities from the Grand? Or are the rooms ready and nothing else. Please can you help with any more info? Thanks!!

Greetings all--
I'm looking to visit Playa Del Carmen (for the fist time!) on my Honeymoon, and I've been interested all along in the Royal Porto Real. From my research so far on message boards and calling the phone numbers on the Real Resorts web site (http://www.realresorts.com.mx): As of now, there are rooms done and being used. They are all in one section that has completed rooms along the Av Consituyentes facing the Grran Porto Real. (they are supposed to be very nice!!!) I believe that the current guests are still using the facilities (pool and restaurants) at the GPR (I don't know if that's causing crowds or not). I saw some photos of the construction from earlier this summer, and you couild see the layout and the main building walls everywhere, but didn't have the outside done or the decor in the inside yet. Also the pool wasn't done at that time. Best I can tell, the word is that the "grand opening" of the resort is still set for around Jan 2005 (plus or minus a month - I occasionally hear Dec and I think once I heard as late as end of Jan/first of Feb- yikes). But January 2005 seems to be the best guess I can come up with. I too am very interested to see when the key parts are officially open: 1.) Pools are filled with water (and the swim-up barstools are underwater!), and cold cervezas being served 2.) The restaurants 3.) Rest of the rooms (beach facing & others) Maybe some of the locals can help keep us up to speed on those items if they happen to pass by. Although it's tough to keep a finger on the pulse, I'm going to go ahead and book our honeymoon at the Royal Porto - My fiancee and I just love the idea of being right IN the town of PDC (which looks amazing with all it has to offer - partying, chillin, shopping eating), and also since it's our Honeymoon, we like the look of the big beautiful rooms with jacuzzi and ocean view. Good combo! So I'm just hoping that things stay on course... Maybe we'll eventually see a report from someone who's stayed there in one of the currently open rooms. Our Honeymoon is in April 2005 - Can't WAIT to visit Playa! Cheers to all on this board, Lobo |

Sukidog, there are people staying in the Royal. I spoke to some who said the rooms were very nice, and could tell by looking at the unfinished part that the hotel would be very nice too when finished. The rooms have jacuzzi's in the middle of the floor. There are no restaurants, bars or pools open yet, they use the GPR across the road (30 second walk). GPR pool wasn't too crowded even with the extra guests from the Royal. I would safely say it will be totally up and running long before May and would have no worries about booking there.
