Cigar Advice
I will be heading down to the Barcelo on a package deal next week. Since transportation is included, I will be going straight from the Cancun airport to the resort. I plan on just lounging with a cigar for a significant portion of my trip. I don't need high end Cubans or anything but I enjoy good mid-level smokes. Where would be a good place to buy these: the airport (if there is a store there) or the resort shop? Or, do I just bring my own? (I figure they have to be more expensive in the States, right?) I guess the same question applies for a little extra room-stock alcohol, as well. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bring your own for sure at least for a few days ... the tabacco shops in PDC have a nice selection and here and there you find guys rolling them for you ... my favorite tabacconist in PDC is on the sea side (east) of Fifth Ave. aprox half block north of the Juarez bus terminal but there is another good one on either Calle 8 or 10 just west of Fifth Ave. and they traditionally have a roller out front ... prices for cigars in Mexico are aprox the same as in the states ... no big savings ... I would avoid any cigars at the airport (not sure they have many available anyway) or a hotel shop both from a financial and freshness perspective ... as far as the booze, you may wish to bring a bottle of your favorite fire water or wait until you get to hit a store like Covi in PDC

Seriously, don't think you will have any problems in bars. In restaurants, though, wouldn't you want to NOT smoke them around people who are eating?

It's O.K.
KathyMc-we all ramble here, mostly. My man[STOGEY] enjoys his cigars too,& bought some really good ones in pdc. Not cheaper, but not more expensive either. Not sure where Barcelo is,but if it is in Playacar, the little mall across from Viva Maya has a shop with a pretty good selection to get you started till you can get downtown for the good stuff!
Let the sun shine.

Softy57 Being a newbie to the board, its nice to figure out who belongs to who here. Thanks for the info. You know, like I said I like to smoke a cigar when i drink (heavily) 3-8 cigars a year is about what i'm all about. And believe you me, its better to have a fat cigar stuffed in my mouth, so i'm not one of those loud obnoxious people. My husband is pretty good about letting me know, that I'm too loud. Too much public speaking i guess. (training)

Question
While we are on this thread, my brother in law asked me to look out for his favourite cigars while I am away (in 18 days yippee!). They are Cuban, and called Montecristo No. 2. Here in the UK, these are very expensive, as our tax is massive on tobacco (£14 per cigar). Does anyone know how prices compare ? I know that in Spain, I can get them for £4, and in Ansterdam for £3!!

So, given their price in Mexico vs. that in the US, I generally smoke Mexican cigars. There is a tobacco shop on the corner of 6th St and 5th Ave, behind the Amex cash exchange window. I went in there several years ago and asked him for the best Mexican cigar he had. He pointed me to a Te-Amo Anniversario Reserve cigar. It is excellent and depending upon size costs between $5 and $10 per cigar. I just got back from PDC 3 days ago and brought a half dozen back with me. They are unobtainable through local sources here and are really enjoyable. One final note about purchasing Cuban cigars in Mexico: know your tobacconist or know your cigar labels. I have been in stores that don't have a single legal/legitimate Cuban cigar, all are fake. You can tell by the label, they are not printed exactly upto spec. See the Cigar Afficianado web site for counterfeit label details. Next, any store which says it is an authorized Habanos dealer is probably legit. Habanos is the name of the distribution company from Cuba which sells the authentic Cuban cigars. That said, the lack of a Habanos designation does not mean they are selling fakes just that if it is an authorized Habanos outlet you're good to go. Hope this helps. |

By the way I sort of consider myself a expert cigars, and from my experience and that of others, if you are looking for the cuban variety be very suspicious. There are many brands out there that have cuban brand names on them, and they may or may not turn out to be cuban.
However if you look at the advvertisement tht I posted above that is a place that sells real cubans. You know a real cuban, because they sort of start out mild and can end up very strong. So if you are tempted to buy cubans, its good to take one and sample it, and if it doesn't end up a very strong cigar at the end, then it isn't the real mcMcoy. |

Do you like your cigars hand rolled or machine rolled?
Because there are some really good hand rolled cigars out there that are made with various types of flavors such as chocolate, cookies and creams etc. |
