Updating the PDC Restaurant list

and wanted to talk about some outstanding food we had....

my kid sister is a vegetarian, so I didn't get to venture off the beaten path as much as I would have liked. Never made it to Oceano which near broke my heart.

Went to the Oasis as it was next door to Mosquito Blue, but didn't find their guac to be the best as stated somewhere on this site. I had a fish fillet stuffed with seafood which was very good. Found food here to be average.

We ate at HOT for breakfast one morning, not much to write home about.

We did venture into a trendier place as we were starving - called Asparragos. I had a traditional Mayan plate which was below average, but my sister had an amazing piece of salmon (is salmon even caught in the waters here?). We also had the best tablemade guac of the trip here. Watch out though, DO NOT order the "cadillac of margaritas" unless you want a 90 peso drink.

One of the best meals we had was at BIP BIP. The pico de gallo they give you before the meal was some of the best I've had EVER. We both had the fillet de pescado veracruzano (we were told it was huachinango - snapper) which was just amazing, and included a beer for about 90 pesos. Service was amazing and I loved the atmosphere.

We also went to Vagabundo for dinner. The service was slow -but this was by far the best or tied with Bip for best fish dinner. My sister had tuna steak and I had again fillet of fish, which I was later told was mero (grouper). The food was top notch. The atmophere in here is also very cute and quaint - the entire floor is small rocks. "Alex" apologized to us for the wait and said they had only been open four nights for dinner. He said they have always been known for breakfasts and that was originally why we sought it out. Give them a try. There is a also a place right next door, quite small, called Salzo or something that had a menu that made my mouth water, but didn't get to try it.

I like the area north of 12th street - and found some better deals up that way as well. Also found a great tapas bar Tapas y Tinto (though never found El Olivo) up that way that had tinto de veranos. El Ole had wonderful drinks - they look pricey at first, but it's two for ones all day. I had great mojitos here and the staff is very attentive. The food looks great but we never tried it.

Lastly- for my vegetarian sister - we had to try 100% Natural, and if not for the super slow service, would probably have eaten there a lot too. Sorry, I know it's not very Mexicana, but the breakfasts were grand - try the oatmeal and also waffles! We also went back for our final dinner before the airport -and I had a great salad and my sis had tacos vegetarianos which were good.

yea, I got slow service in the Vagabunda, but it was breakfast and it was packed.

Our new favorite place for menu del dia dining:
El Itakate, on Calle 2 between 10th & 15th. 30 pesos gets you an entree, pasta soup, beans, rice, and a HUGE glass of agua fresca. I had an excellent pollo en pipian; one daughter had good meatballs en caldo; other daughter & husband had good fried chicken.

Last May my daughter and I found a restaurant called MangoTail on 4th between 5th & 10th. The food was really outstanding. Has anyone been there or are they still there? I've seen no mention of it. I'd like to go there in Dec. if they're still around.

Just got back from playa yesterday, thanks to all for their suggestions on restaurants and entertainment. We had a blast, and will be back asap. I have to agree about the Oasis, just didn't find it all that great after all the hype we got. Dr Tacos was much better. Our favorite place by far was a little joint called Carboncitos. It is located on calle four between 5th and 10th. Awsome arrachera and pastor, but what brought us back again and again was their homemade chorriso. About 6 bucks U.S. will get you a meal and an ice cold beer served in a frosty mug. Great service, great prices and great location, we were very surprised not to have heard of it from anyone.

We loved the carts for breakfast(watch out for the green salsa if u r a heat wimp). Media Luna was nice when we needed a switch from tacos, the meals are tasty, and the upstairs patio is perfect for people watching.

Thanks to all for their suggestions, they sure added to our trip. Keep posting.

Thanks for all the places can't wait to try them. But I was wanting to find a meat market & a fish market not the big super san fransico but a good small local joint so I can do some cooking. Thanks!!!

I totally agree; I think Carboncito's has some of the best food around and is so reasonably priced and in a terrific location. Their frijoles charros are extremely yummy.
