We still have some of our OLD local favorites (But some didn't reopen it looked like to me, by this I mean the Ma and Pa places).. But anyway, Carboncitos is now on our list of favorite OLD places to eat... "Eat It Like You Mean It!" Great food...very friendly staff...cold beer. Good stuff. |

Never did the "cook your own" thing, but you might try La Tarraya, at Calle 2 and the beach. Yes, they are a seafood restaurant, but I believe they have their own fishing fleet, so maybe you could ask if they sell retail seafood as well. Worth a try!

One thing to keep in mind on these is that nobody seems to be too upfront about price. We have heard a lot about the great steak meal at Don Jose Chicago. We went to check it out and i almost soiled myself when i saw that it was $28!!!!
Half the places i thought about going to while in Playa were well overpriced IMO. |

New Years Trip
We were in Playa for New Years. I thought I would give you a few of our favorites:
Bip Bip -- best fajitas and torilla soup we had. Also, very cheap, great service and nice relaxed low key atmosphere. We just loved it. Sol Food (on the Playa Card) -- wonderful fresh seafood. Good friendly service. Aca Taco -- our favorite tacos (though I must admit we did not try all those recommended because my husband did not want to go anywhere else after we tried Aca). We tried all their varieties and I also tried one of their burritos which was huge and very good. Pez Vela -- our favorite margarita (regular on the rocks) in town. We watched them squeeze the fresh lime juice they use to make them. We went there just about every night and sat at one of the tall tables on the street, drank a margarita and watched everyone strolling on 5th. We never ate here. |

Tried Negrosal last week. It just opened across from Acanto(so 14th maybe )east of fifth. It is more of a fine dining then cocktails after or before dinner place. The foood was very notable and the place came out great. The floors are made of glass and ther is a private dining room underneath. Also ate at Fly again, and actually enjoyed it this time. Also ate at glass bar.

OK - Not sure if this is where I need to post this or not, but here goes...
We are going to Playa next March (I know - it is a long time off and things change). It will be our 3rd trip to Mexico - first 2 spent @ Mayan Palace (MIL has time shares so that's where we ended up) but this time we are planning on staying at the Playa Maya - we really like Playa del Carmen. I love Mexican food - just about anything. Problem is my husband is mostly meat and potatos with very little seasoning (salt...) - he will eat fish - again, with very little seasoning (salt...). Please give me guidance on places that we can eat (together) that will not kill our budget. I know - of all the places to travel we go to Mexico and he won't eat the food. None of our friends and family can understand - we just fell in love with the people and the area. |

If your husband likes fish, you should be good to eat just about anywhere along 5th. It didn't seem to me that there was a lot of seasoning used when you order grilled fish and most restaurants had it on their menu. Might have a bit of black pepper, maybe some butter, but all fairly normal things a 'fussy' palate can handle. I don't do super spicy and I didn't have a problem ever. If he eats red meat, there are a lot of steak places. My sister in law said the best steak she has ever had was served at La Siesta, on 1st between calles 14 y 16. Ok, now I am really hungry just thinking about all the wonderful meals we ate on our holiday.

Looking for a restaurant on Sunday for 10-12 for Dinner. Want something real good. Carboncitos big enough? El Oasis big enough? Any suggestions? I know of and have read about a lot of restaurants, the size of the party is my main concern.
