.....I've noticed this also. About half the places are over the median price and about half are under it. We eat at the below median price places for most of our stay and have one "splurge" at one of the over median price places. Chicago Don Jose's is a good choice on the high end.

Yes, both places can easily accomodate a larger party.

Don Diego's won't break the bank and they had a great grilled fish for about 120 pesos or less. Shrimp was about the same or a bit more. They also had specials on shrimp and a small lobster tail special for around 100 pesos. Babe's was fantastic and really reasonable. The Thai Chicken thing in that Peanut Sauce was awesome. They have a Swedish Meatballs dish with Mashed Potatoes that is supposed to be great. Around 80 pesos gets you a great meal. Food at Playa Maya was all great. Loved the shrimp tacos. They also have Fish tacos. The Fajitas were great too as was the Bucket of Beer and Nachos special. We ate and drank (mostly beer) excessively ate lots of shrimp dinners and also lobster. Didn't skimp and only spent around $35 per person per day. Put on a good 10 pounds in the 10 nights we stayed there. For cheap meat dishes many on this board recommend El Serape Grill for Arrachera. Also HC de Monterrey. Didn't try them myself so I can't comment.

Muchos Gracias

Hi there!

Thanks for the info. My husband and I are trying to come up with a list of places to eat at while we're at Playa del Carmen in a few weeks. We're trying to get together a site with a restaurant review function. Gracias muchacho.

best margarita

At the risk of attracting the wrath of folks who think that gringos can't make great margaritas in Playa, let me recommend D.J.'s margaritas at, well, "D.J.s", next to El Oasis. All the bartenders make good ones, but D.J. makes the best, IMHO. Just go there when the Cubs are playing on tele and he'll probably be there.

Viva Margarita does NOT make the best Margarita! They are overpriced, and La Ranita or Tequila Barrel or mostly anywhere makes them better.

Pummarola makes a good pizza for a good price.

Happy tasting!

Someone else you might recognize will probably also be there when the Cubs are playing on tele.

Because every Cubs fan needs something tasty and alcoholic to wash away the blues of the final score?

fish in playa

I've had mixed experience with fish in Playa, although when we were there a few months ago, we had a fantastic whole grilled snapper (as I recall) at Ajua. Overall, however, too many places I've been overcook fish (and lobster.) If I could find a good fish market in Playa, as good as the ones I've frequented in Puerto Vallarta, I'd buy it myself, take it back to the condo, and cook it myself. After all, fish is simple to cook and the key to great fish is great quality fish. The rest is easy.

Might have a bit of black pepper, maybe some butter, but all fairly normal things a 'fussy' palate can handle. I don't do super spicy and I didn't have a problem ever. If he eats red meat, there are a lot of steak places. My sister in law said the best steak she has ever had was served at La Siesta, on 1st between calles 14 y 16. Ok, now I am really hungry just thinking about all the wonderful meals we ate on our holiday.

There's a great fresh fish market - called Oceano, on Calle 34, just west of Av 30 (block and a half maybe). You can take your fish home and cook it, or ask them to fry it. I agree, the key is great quality fish - I think you'll find it there!

That's great. Thanks for the tip. It's close to our condo and we're going down in a week or two. We will try it out.
