More adventures in paradise...
Had another adventure yesterday that some of you might be interested in, particularly if you hope to live here someday. My neighbors have told me about buying jungle furniture from the Mayans, so on our return trip from Yucatan Thursday, we stopped so I could look at some alongside the road south of Tulum, and I ended up buying a couple bar stools, and finding some patio furniture that I wanted also but that wouldn't fit in our vehicle. Told the fellow that I would return on Saturday for the rest. He also told me he had two more bar stools at his home and he would have those there Saturday as well.
I tried at the last minute to find a neighbor with a truck (I have a Chevy Tracker) but couldn't, so I headed out alone in my car with my fingers crossed. Ended up offering a ride to a nice young man who was walking, thinking just to the main road, but he was going my way so I gave him a ride all the way to his guitar lesson in Tulum. He was a Mexican from Veracruz, who spoke little English so I got to practice mi espanol a bit. It was WAY farther than I remembered... 60 miles or so one way, but I finally got there. I should have stopped for gas in Tulum but thought I had enough to get my furniture and back to the station. Finally got to the shack on the roadside and a grandson of the original guy was napping there in his hammock and about fell out when he realized he had company! Soon, his father/uncle showed up in a car and continued the negotiations. Only a couple of the pieces fit INside my car, but I had brought rope and tie-down straps and they/we strapped the big piece on the top - a funny side note: they didn't even consider using the straps as intended with the buckle and hooks; they took them apart and tied them in knots! However... the bar stools weren't there; they were still back at the village. So, even though Spanish is a second language for both of us (they are Mayan and that is their first), we figured it out and agreed that I would follow him back to his house and get the other two stools. I did, concerned for my gas (and the piece on top of the car!) all the way - way, WAY back into the jungle. Wow. The pigs and chickens and women and children kept their friendly, smiling, distance, though they were all watching on the other side of the dirt yard, outside their stick house, and I followed the guys into their stick workshed and looked at the stools and they were fine so we tied them on top, too. Can you say hill(jungle)billy? (Me, with all the furniture strapped to me, not them!) So I head back toward Tulum, praying that my gas held out, turning off the AC to conserve it. Yay, I made it, filled up, and then turned the car around and went back into Tulum. Stopped at a roadside stand and bought some beautiful veggies and fruit and eggs. Stopped at a chicken stand and bought two roasted chickens with the accompanying rice, slaw, fresh corn tortillas, salsa for my next few meals. Stopped at the ATM and got some cash. Drove up the road a little way and stopped for the yummiest helado de coco (coconut ice cream - mmmm) and headed home. A neighbor unloaded it for me and now I have furniture outside, though I need to get the workman here to varnish it all for me. And you'll just have to guess what 4 bar stools, a loveseat, 2 chairs and a (coffee?) table cost me!

Looking good
Susie -
Looks like the place is really shaping up nicely! Hope I get a chance to come see it in person soon - still hoping to be able to make a quick trip between now and holidays. Ummm, I'm guessing that you've been to Casa Cenote recently too, didn't you? Are you going to give us a trip report?- Tyra |

Jose, the guard, and I reached an understanding and then he disappeared. I haven't seen him for a couple weeks. So no ongoing Spanish practice... As for going to CC... if acceptable men were that easy to find... Well, let's just say I pretty much wrote off ever finding Mr. Right when I moved here! But ya never know, do ya? |

Susie the weather girl:
We just got home last night after 14 beautiful days in Mexico(only one day hazy/overcast), 14 out of the 15 days we were there it was blue Mexican skys with a few puffy white clouds floating by. We had a great time and were able to see a lot more of the Mayan Riviera this time then we have in the last few years. Loved Isla, the beaches south of Tulum and Puerto Morelos. Keep forecasting those blue sky's. Nice chairs. DaveB |
