Jude, I have been to many resorts in the Playa area. Pretty much all of the Iberostars and have been to the Barcelo Maya. To answer your question?? No.. Each has thier own thing, just depends on what you want?? Awesome beach? Barcelo with awesome pools.. However the Iberostars have awesome pools as well. Food at most are the same. Do you want to be close to Playa Del carmen? Take the Iberostar Quetzal/ Tucan. If you do not care to be too close to PDC then your options open up. the Barcelo south( awesome beaches).. Iberostar pariso beach complex to the north with the other sister resorts have awesome beaches but not like the ones to the south of town near Tulum. If you really want a good smaller resort that has a decent size pool & very good food for an AI, Awesome beach (actually my favorite beach & no one around...perfect) I say try the Catalonia Royal Tulum..Next beach over from the Barcelo.. I am not a travel agent I just tell things to others to help out if I can.. However Shammy knows her stuff and If I were you, take her advice..
