1st visit to Playa 12/24-1/2 - Need a little help!

Thank you for this site! It has been a wonderful resource in planning our trip. We will be in town celebrating my 40th b-day from 12/24-1/2. Airplane tickets are booked but no final decision on a hotel. Hoping to get some help!

After much reading, my first choice was Playa Maya but the only rooms left are $$$! I am now on La Tortuga or Alhambra - I know they are completely different. I was pretty set on La T. but my husband was a little concerned about walking to the beach (he is a little lazy on vacation). Can anyone offer suggestions? or new hotels to look at?

Very excited about the Christmas/New Years thread here. I was hoping to run into some holiday cheer! Hope a few more showing up at the bars won't be a problem.

In case the TX people read this, we are in Austin - Viva la Lance!

While I can’t compare the two hotels. The Tortuga is my favorite upscale off beach hotel.

I've stayed at both and much prefer El Alhambra. But if you need a pool, then your best bet is La Tortuga.

The walk to the beach is trivial - I don't see it as a big factor between the two.

I am one of those TX people...right outside of Dallas. I have never stayed at Alhambra, but have stayed at La Tortuga 3 times since last May and have another trip booked there in another swim up room in August for my 37th birthday celebration. It is not that far of a walk to the beach, plus you get to check out places on your way there. I also prefer the beach on the north side. The personable service is incredible at Tortuga. I cannot speak for Alhambra, but have heard great things about them. Have fun either way and represent the Texans well!!!!

Now to doing more reading about restraunts, bars, fun stuff to do...

My wife and I stayed at the Albatros Royale on 8th and the Beach at the end of June. If your husband doesn't like to walk to the beach at the Albatros you can roll out of bed and land in the sand. Our son's and their friends stayed at La Tortuga and liked it a lot. Nice pool and rooms.
Just half a block behind La Tortuga is the HOT Baking Company. Great breakfast. Our favorite restaurants were Karens on 5 between 2 and 4 and Le Perilla at the corner of 5 and 8.
We miss PDC already. Only 50 weeks to go.
