...or is that "El-O...!" .....you see....that's how they say HELLO....the "H" is usually silent with a bit more emphasis on the second syllable...lingering on the "O"...with kind of a slow slide UP on the scale as well... aw well....just forget it - I'm babbling... velkommen!! |

Oh my! Liking it here even better the morning after the night before!
Yeah I should have guessed someone would pick up on my unfortunate choice of wording there. I did of course mean the kid's club at the Riu Tequila........ not "six easy lessons to ruin one's liver at age eleven club" I love a bit of sarcasm. Thankyou for the idea about the ATV trip....... I shall check it out. I am sure it would be great to do but we will be joining some friends from the Uk and I am not sure that it would be their cup of tea. Hiya BeachWolverine, Thank you too for your welcome. So besides being the Michigan State Animal what's the connection?? Football?? The American game?? Only joking of course! I must confess that I know very little about the game and much prefer the real game of footy, you play it with ya feet....... you may know it as soccer. We are true soccer fans. |

Kbb,
Just a couple lessons on Michigan. Yes, the wolverine is the state animal, but is also the mascot for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor - as an alumus of that great university (Oxford is considered the U of Michigan of the UK, ya know ) I have some entitlement to the name. The other thing you must learn is that when anyone ask you where you live; you hold up your hand, in the shape of the Michigan mitten, and point to the appropriate place. Where are you in Michigan? (verbal responses are acceptable when you can't hold your hand up). regards, BW |

I don't think I could have interested my 12 year old daughter in a dinner cruise, but here are some of the activities they do LOVE when we go to PDC.1. Horseback riding at the Rancho Punta Venado. It is about 10 mins south of the Playacar Resort area on east side of Hwy 307. An easy ride by taxi. Prices are very reasonable, and it is NOT one of those huge tours with 75 people as is usually the case at Loma Bonita or Rancho Grande. When we went, our family rode alone with the guides. AWESOME! The place is owned and run by Dr. Agustín Carrillo Arce. His guides will instruct you on how to trail ride if you are a novice. You will ride along a beautiful coastal trail that winds through the tropical jungle almost always within sight of the beautiful Caribbean until it opens onto an awesome stretch of unspoiled and usually deserted natural sandy white beach with no one and nothing around. Your son will love it! The following information on how to contact them was previously posted by Anna "I have a few numbers you can call to make a reservation: 980-65953, 987-77604 and 987-79701. They are all cellular phones so when in Playa dial 044 in front of the number." 2. The CROCOCUN Zoo is another great place for an 11 year old. It is a little farther from PDC, but still easily accessible on route 307 north from the Playacar area. It was very inexpensive. Crococun was more for the kids, but I have to admit I loved it too. Make sure you get a private guide, because then you will be able to hold and interact with the animals. The guide told us that we were safe from the crocodiles because "they are only fed chicken, and do not recognize red meat (humans) as a food source. I'm still a little skeptical of that factoid. But I never felt in danger. You will be able to hold small crocodiles. What 11 year old boy wouldn't love that? We actually walked through the crocodile pen where there were upwards of 30 crocodiles lying around. Some of them were at least 12 feet long. I have pitures of my family kneeling next to a 10 foot long croc with nothing between them and the croc except the fact that he only eats chicken! It was definately a Steve Irwin moment. We also got to meet Jessica the chimp that lives in the local jungle. She is not a resident of the zoo, but will come and hang out with anyone holding a banana. She is very cute. I have a picture of Jessica on my duaghters shoulder eating a banana my daughter gave her. There was another chimp as well who had the cutest baby, but was a bit protective because of her baby. The guide said that as the baby gets older, her mom will be less protective. We also got to hold various snakes including a boa that could easily have squished my 8 year old daughter. There was also a red iguana which I did not know existed. The guide said they got her red through a specific diet, but I can't remember what it was. I also loved the mexican hairless dogs, which I had never seen before. Anyways, it was inexpensive, uncrowded, close to Playa del Carmen, educational and fun. I doubt your will ever be allowed to have you picture taken with several large croc's in the US ... even if all they eat is chicken! Make sure you either bring banana's and peanuts with you, or you can buy them at the zoo (expensive). 3. Xel Ha. I won't give too much detail here because they have a good WEB site at http://www.xel-ha.com.mx . Make sure you go to the top right of the home page and select english. In my humble opinion, there are many nicer places to snorkel (Yal Ku, Cozumel, etc) but for the beginner Xel-Ha is a no brainer. It is a very safe, protected lagoon. There are life guards all around. ALL equipment and even a nice lunch is provided if you purchase the all inclusive (which I suggest unless you have your own snorkel gear as we do). It is a beautiful eco water park with abundant marine life for you to see. For the less adventurous of the group, you can sit on the beach or lie in a hammock, or just venture a bit from one of the platforms. Now for the birthday boy, the big event will be the dolphin swim. My kids just loved it. It was not a lame dolphin swim like you get in the US say at Sea World. You actually get to play with and RIDE the dolphins if you choose to. I have a great picture of my 8 year old girl (who was 6 at the time) being propelled through the water by 2 bottle nose dolphins who were pushing her by the feet. She is completely out of the water and on their noses If you can, go on a Saturday. There will be more "locals" than tourists and you'll have the place practically to yourself. This was the highlight of our 2002 trip for our girls, and the dolphin swim was our 6 years olds birthday bash. We also went in 2004, but on a Sunday. There are no dolphin swims on Sunday, but boy was the place "dead". |
