This is probably best addressed to James. Can you tell me how old that Kibi Kibi article is? My six year old son was upset about us going to Playa without him (hey, we never got a honeymoon!) but he read the Kibi Kibi article along with me and he thinks that Mom and Dad can play the mexican version of Where's Waldo (he's a huge fan...he calls the new version Donde esta Jose!!! Kid speaks more spanish than me!) He wants us to track him down and take a picture with him.
My husband is afraid of getting sick from the kibi and anything else we may get from the off 5th restaurants/vendors. Any advice on times or places to find Jose and/or places to try food that is native to the region would be great. Thanks!

I always eat from the street vendors in Playa. Tortas, Tacos, Hotdogs, churros they're all great. Never goten sick yet. You can get some great food from the street vendors....cheap too.

Bullet-
Thanks for the info. We've never left the country, so this is a completely new experience for us. Is there a difference between Yucatan cuisine and regular Mexican? I live in California and some of my closest friends were originally from Jalisco, so I've had LOTS of food from that region. Is Yucatan pretty much the same?

Mexican cuisine is very regionally influenced, and the dishes of the Yucatan are distinct in their seasonings and preparation style. We've covered this a bit in our food article. That first dish photo is a picture of cochinita pibil, very Yucateco!

I think the quality of food and it's preparation is higher on Fifth Avenue than in the AI's.

I saw another kibi guy with his aquarium yesterday, but it was a different dude. That other guy used to enjoy a bottle after a day of hawking his wares, and would often show up at my door off his rocker. I haven't seen him in a while.

DaniP - have to agree with bullet on the vendors...we just came back from PDC this week - spent two weeks at the Riu Playacar and no problems with the food, water etc. If you like churros - buy them from one of the vendors on 5th Ave...they are the BEST, we walked the beach just to get them almost every day. Also..we did the touristy thing and went to senor frogs for dinner one evening (one of the guys in our group loves the fajitas there) we had chicken and beef fajitas, ceasar salad (dressing made on the spot - yes using raw egg), buckets of cerveza and sat back and vegitated. Not one of us was ever sick or had any tummy issue in the two weeks. Out of the islands and southern destinations Playa is the cleanest and safest places we have been and would not hesitate to eat at any of the resturants there. Agree with James - the food at Playa resturants is better than some of the AI's.

Thanks so much for the info guys...I'm not expecting much from our AI, but we got it for $149 per night and that covers both of us. I figured that at that price we could certainly stray for a meal or two or three. Listening to the others on the message boards, it sounds like the Dragon Bar stays pretty crowded. Is there anywhere else we can go? (his b-day is May 9th, while we're down there) We don't mind crowds, but I just want to take him to the best! Also, maybe a restaurant for Mother's Day?
