Random stops by Police?
When we were on 5th ave midday on a weds last month a police officer appeared to say something to us in spanish (in a very low tone). Quickly thinking back to what I had read on this site about getting pulled over, I just kept walking like I didn't hear or understand him. My GF asked if that officer had been speaking to us, and I said that it didn't matter, if he had really wanted us, he would have surely stopped us. Just for future reference, was this foolish on my part or was my thinking sound? I don't want to make a habit of doing something foolish while visiting the area. We had not been drinking or jay-walking or anything. Maybe he was just asking if us loco gringos were ok in the midday sun. hehehe

You did the right thing. People like to blow the whole Mexican Police thing out of proportion. I'm sure there are bad instances, you can read about some on this forum, but if in your situation you handled it the way you should have....

Well, fairydust, maybe you over-reacted just a little bit, being as you say in a bugger-off mood already. And I'm sorry, but to go to the police station to report them - that I think would be a big waste of time in any country. It's hard to be a girl sometimes; you just have to learn how to let things run off you - it'll make you a happier person.
For the record, girls - we do not really have a problem with the police harassing people here in Playa del Carmen. I'm not saying it never happens - there are idiots in any profession - but it's nothing to worry about. |
