If you want an SLR, a nice model is the digital Rebel. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of a professional SLR but it does have a lot of options that you don't get with a point and shoot. You can get one for around $500, depending on what you want to get with it.

If you want a decent point and shoot, I highly recommend the Canon S3 IS. This looks like an adolescent SLR (not full-sized SLR). It is not an SLR, however. The camera has a great optical zoom and takes great video (particularly for posting on the Web). The S3 IS also has "image stabilization," which is great after a night of Playa craziness at places like the Tequila Barrel.
Thanks Scoop, I'm also a canon person, but I really want a middle of the road slr, technology changes so fast. I want to take a pic of a flower early morning and be able to see dew drops on the flower. Does this make sense?
