His father is from Kenya, and his mother is white. There are some in the black community who claim that because he was not a descendent of slaves he does not possess a "true" African American heritage (as if that's a uniform thing...)

I think he squashed the fire at the debates when asked if he was "black enough," and countered with "You know, when I'm catching a cab in Manhattan--in the past, I think I've given my credentials."
